This is a pretty horrible analogy, sorry. There are many reasons a user might want to run two OSes concurrently. There's not much real-world reason to have two Steam games running simultaneously, even though it is annoying to get booted from Steam on one machine when you connect on another. I wouldn't say that makes me "outraged".

Yes, I buy and sell PC games all the time. Moreso in the past, just because I played more games, but I still would not hesitate to do so.

Same here.

I don't normally buy games off Steam unless it's an indie title that you can't get a retail version of. I still like boxes and game manuals myself. And the ability to sell games.. Until steam offers that feature i'm not all that excited about it.

I pretty much couldn't care less about a box and manual. In fact, the eco-friendly side of me wished boxed products would go the way of the dodo for all things that can be sold digitally. I just want to be able to resell that digital good after I'm through using it. I don't want a license, I want a piece of property. I suppose that's the fallacy with digital good though, they just don't wear out and a used copy is every bit (no pun intended) as good as a new copy.

I suppose what I really dislike, is that there is price parity between physically and digitally distributed goods, even though the physical good and be resold. Just discount the digitally distributed good and everything is alright.

try it .. it doesn't always work very well

it sounds good in theory .. but when Steam breaks, and if you get locked out, it is up to you to PROVE your account to them
- not to mention the generally crap level of service their CS provides .. and server slowdowns .. and rip-off time limited demos that take all weekend to D/L - you get 20 minutes to play and then you have to buy the g-d game

Steam is suck DRM
- i am glad some of you like it

UT3 had a free weekend a few months ago. I clicked to install the game and the free weekend ran out before the game finished downloading. Also, the Eidos bundle took a little over 2 weeks to fully download.

So if I'm playing CS, my gf can't play TF2? That makes a lot of sense. I wish the way we share cars was like that. I'm driving my car, she turns hers on, then my car shuts off. Flawless system!

Do you have any examples of this or are you just speculating? I have used the offline feature with zero problems to play Empire: Total War, UT3 Black, Portal, Dawn of War, Company of Heroes, and Titan Quest on my laptop when I have been travelling in South Africa without internet. Am I just naturally lucky?

It's not very sporting to discuss consequences of failure when you are assuming the failure is going to occur. Can you be more specific about steam "breaking"? Are you talking about somebody else guessing your password and changing it on you?

How is this possibly a negative? Nobody is forcing you to play the demo, it is simply a choice that you wouldn't have otherwise. Presenting somebody with an alternative only does them a disservice when you assume that they cannot be trusted to make their own choices.

She can get her own account with TF2. Why would she be using yours? The car thing? Please. Give up on the dumb metaphors.

Well yes, but the games are still tied to Steam?s DRM. The installation point I made was but one problem with Steam.

I also like how I can play my games on anyone's computer.
I can do exactly the same thing with a USB stick, or with an iPod.

That goes for any EULA; Steam or otherwise.

What 'rights' are you referring to?
The fact that you don?t own any of your games, and that Valve can shut down multiple games in one hit by simply disabling your Steam account.

SecuROM/Starforce can?t do that and even if they tried, they?d be defeated with no-CD cracks. I crack every game I buy because as the owner, I shouldn?t be molested with DRM and I should be free to enjoy the game however I please. Every game except Steam titles that is, where I dare not try in case my account is disabled.

Steam has the account holder completely by the balls. If your account is disabled, you lose access to everything tied to it. I can?t think of any other DRM scheme that can do that, can you?

And all it takes is something as trivial as some schmuck trying to use a stolen CD-key which just happens to match your legitimate key.

Sure. In addition to the above, there's the issue of when Valve decided legitimate copies of Orange Box purchased overseas were in the ?wrong zone?, and retroactively disabled previously working and validated CD keys.

What?s worse is that other games were retroactively disabled, games that had been running fine for months:

http://consumerist.com/consume...rnationally-314690.php

http://digg.com/pc_games/Valve..._Asian_Orange_Box_keys

http://digg.com/gaming_news/Va...eys_Bought_in_Thailand

http://digg.com/gaming_news/Va...ge_Box_Internationally

A couple of quotes:

Yeah i bought a CD version of half-life 2 game of the year edition 9+ months ago from Thailand. I still have the box in my room.
This week i find my all of my Half life 2 games disabled, no CS, No HL2, nothing except the original half life on my account. This is after i bought a legit version of the orange box from Steampowered.com
WTF is this BS.
You cant retroactively punish 9month old customers who has a whole range of games on the steam system???
What am I supposed to do?
When was the last time Starfoce or SecuROM did anything like that?

A response from Valve:

Games purchased in Thailand or Russia can only be played from those countries. If you purchased a game from Thailand or Russia and you do not live in one of those countries, you need to contact the seller for a refund.
So where?s this stated in the Steam EULA or on the game?s box? Also, what happens if someone moves countries with a Steam catalogue? Are they expected to repurchase all of their games again because they?re in the ?wrong? zone?

So much for the ?I can play my games from any computer I like? argument.

It?s a shame so many people choose to bury their heads in the sand rather than accept the alarming DRM muscle Steam can leverage any time it pleases.

it is clear you - and the rest of the flock - really like Steam.
- Some of us have had issues with this AWFUL service which IS DRM .. i have had plenty of issues and the CS at Steam is not helpful.

The only games i have on Steam are the ones i am FORCED to have for benchmarking - games like Lost Planet, where i bought the retail box so as not to deal with those asses. Steam does not work for me and i will never support sugar-coated shit {DRM}

i can crack every game i buy and never have an issue with them. i OWN them. Yet every time i benchmark a Steam game, i have to submit to their DRM - without a choice
- once the rest of you guys figure out the rip-off steam really is - they may go out of business

the ONLY thing that surprises me is that a really quality company has not put them out of business already

I like Steam

I like having my apps in the cloud, instead of a box in my closet.

I get amazingly good d/l speeds from steam servers, usually 1 - 2.2 mb/sec

This is my biggest complaint against Steam. I wouldn't be as paranoid about this if, as you've shown, they didn't so casually disable legitimate accounts. The idea that a cheater might get some comeuppance by being completely banned from Steam may be satisfying, but the thought that I could suddenly, through no fault of my own, lose access to hundreds of dollars of software makes me reluctant to buy anything on the platform in the first place.

Nonetheless, I am generally positive toward Steam and haven't had too many issues with the titles I've purchased through it, DRM concerns aside.

TBH, I am not crazy about STEAM either. The biggest problem I see is when you only need the cd key and used other means of obtaining the game. For example, Company of Heroes does not need to be bought at all as long as you have a cd key! It get automatically downloaded once the cd key is entered. when I bought Tales of Valour on STEAM I had to download the damn thing for like half of the day despite the fact that I ONLY needed the CD key!!!! I mailed the customer support butt hey told me that I ahve to DL the game 1st and then I can get the CD key... retarded!

I suppose steam is fine when:

a)you are getting the game for your 1st time, and you have a huge HD where you dont have to worry about ever having to uninstall games dled from steam.
b)you have a cable or faster internet connection and your tiem is not very important to you.
c)you are a cheap bastard like me and when you can get a game significantly cheaper on steam, you are willing to put up with all issues described above.

She would be using mine because we do that with literally every other thing either of us own.

We swap DVDs with each other. I borrow one of hers (not all of them), and she borrows one of mine. We swap books all the time. I'll read something then hand it off to her; I don't need to give her my entire book collection. Then it comes to video games, "shawn can I play your COD4?" nope, sorry, I'm playing GTA4 which just happens to be on the same account.

You must have the absolute worst relationship in the world if you don't share anything with your significant other. No you can't touch my books. No you can't have any of my food. No you can't sit on my couch. Don't stand on my floor either.
