Steam may be restrictive, but it's DRM which makes it EASIER for me to buy and use games, and communicate with fellow gamers. Not to mention the restrictions aren't bad ones, I don't ever sell ym games, and no root kits, no install limits, etc etc.

Downloading games to any computer at ~1 MB/s is epic win.

I havent read thru all the replies but I get about 500-750+ kbps and have never had a prob with steam. I think there is something wrong with your connection and or system. The real pet-peeve i have with steam tho, is the fact that once you buy via steam, your game is locked to the acct and so you cannot re-sell the game once your tired and finished with it.

Im really careful which games i buy via steam. Either they're dirt cheap on sale so i dont care about re-sell, or games like TF2 i'll prolly keep playing forever.

i have been playing games since the 90s

Digital Distribution owns the game; not you

when they go out of business, you got a lot of useless zeros and ones

It's happened to me within the last three years. Previously functioning offline mode in HL2 stopped working and I had to keep connecting for a few days until it started working again.

The point is, offline mode isn?t infallible, and if it stops working and you?re stuck somewhere with no internet access, you can?t play your games.

That?s wrong; I paid for those games so I shouldn?t need an internet connection to play them.

That's why I support GOG, because you do own the games, yet still gain the benefits of digital distribution if you want them.

There's no DRM, no installation restrictions, and no dial-home requirement. In fact they explicitly state you own any game you buy from them.

Also there?s no ?zoning? and no price gouging just because you happen to live in a certain part of the world. You can buy and play the games anywhere in the world, and they?re the same price.

That?s why I support Good Old Games whenever possible, and everyone that supports digital distribution and consumer rights should too.

I know this is selfish but until I have a problem with Steam it is A-ok in my book. I have three accounts with multiple games on each that I have accessed from dozens of pc's across the US and Canada with no issues what so ever. I frequently let others borrow my accounts (thats why I have so many) and again, no issues yet.

Yes, there is a "doomsday" possibility but you know what, N Korea could also start nuking people left and right. Possible? Yes. Likely? No. I don't worry about what might become of my games. I always buy them cheap and get my moneys worth out of them in the first month. After that it's all icing on the cake.

If Valve starts to look like it's going to fail I'll start buying my games retail again, assuming that even exists anymore. As long as they are in wonderful financial health I will continue to support their "nasty DRM" scheme as it is convenient for me. You don't like it? Fine, thats your right. For me it's been a wonderful experience.

They need better hack protection. Other than that, I like Steam. It just seems that every other player is on something or other.

I'll read something then hand it off to her; I don't need to give her my entire book collection. Then it comes to video games, "shawn can I play your COD4?" nope, sorry, I'm playing GTA4 which just happens to be on the same account.

You must have the absolute worst relationship in the world if you don't share anything with your significant other. No you can't touch my books. No you can't have any of my food. No you can't sit on my couch. Don't stand on my floor either.

Are you serious? Did you really just compare the way Steam drops multiple connections to refusing food to your girlfriend? You can share whatever you want, but if you want to share Steam games with your girl, get your ass out of the chair and let her sit down in front of the screen while you go do something else. It's just the way it works to prevent one account or license from being used by multiple people at the same time. If it means that much to you, either set up a Steam account for her and let her buy the games she's interested in, or stick to physical media. Call it a limitation of the platform, but this hyperbole is just annoying.

I DL games from Steam at 2mb+/sec, they have huge weekend sales all the time, combo deals, easy way to see new indie games, and patches are automatically applied and installed for any owned game.

Steam FTW.

I just wish they had more games in their inventory. Although Steam's start was a bit shakey.. and i wasnt very happy at all, its pretty solid now. Only irritation now is the fact that hl2.exe error's everytime i exit out of CSS. Not really a problem but just annoying. You'd assume they would fix this minor problem after 6+ months of it being around.

EDIT: To the OP.. dont blame Steam your connection blows or its not configured correctly.

Same here. I had been using Steam without issue until last year. Then suddenly I was unable to play any of my Steam games for nearly a month due to a glitch in their system. Steam customer support kept telling me it was on my end even though hundreds of others were having the same problem. They finally admitted there was a problem and eventually fixed it. I have not bought a game that requires Steam since.

Steam blows!

That is the business model that hopefully will supplant Steams'
- the fans ignore Steam's serious issues because "something bad" hasn't happened to them personally ...
... yet!

Why not backup your games >_>

You should organize your HDD to have an OS and a Data Partition.

I have 2 120GB Vertex for OS and a RAID 6 6TB array for movies, music, and games.

If I need to reformat, I backup the steam files to the RAID6 and restore.

Actually Dawn of War 2 forced me into Steam. After paying $100 for the retail package which has no mention of Steam anywhere on the box, I was forced to link the game to my Steam account. Apart from the obvious resale issue, this is also extremely annoying because Steam forces me to patch the game. This may sound convenient, but it's a huge pain in the ass because one of my favourite features of DoW2 is the replays, and each patch destroys my ability to watch older replays.

i have to benchmark for my work; technically i am "forced" to use Steam - even though i purchased the retail boxed copy of Lost Planet
- very SADLY for me, it had no mention of Steam as a requirement for playing it

*other* than my work, i do not support them because of the bad experiences i personally experienced with them and their CS.

This is a forum; no one "forced" you to reply.
- it is clear to me that Steam has it fans and its haters .. and they all come up with good reasons to support their view

if you have no issues, you will love them
- if they screw you over, you will hate them
^^i am stating the obvious^^

Yeah, personally I think it's great too.
Or the same Steam that downloads self updates and doesn't allow you to cancel them even if you want to play a game? (Thus screwing up ping, especially if you are on a low b/w connection where they take a while to download).
Or the Steam which (for me on multiple computers, connections and accounts) likes to start paused updates for games I'm not playing when I launch a different game I do want to play (thus screwing up ping if it's an MP game)?
I LOVE IT!

you know if you go into the properties of a game on steam you can set it to not automatically update

You still have a choice though and that is not use it. If you are really against Steam then don't use anything that supports it and let those publishers know you will not use their products. If you just continue to use the products then nothing changes.

It is the same thing with people that are against DRM claiming they are forced to use the product. No , you are not forced, you can refuse to buy it. By buying it and using it you are telling the publisher, I don't like what you are doing, but I will buy your products anyway. Once you give them your money they have no reason to care what you think.

I have done that with all EA products for the past 4 months. I refuse to buy anything they produce and have emailed and written a letter to them telling them why.

Do I need to restrict my sentences to one-syllable words? I didn't know that I needed Steam for DoW2 until after I purchased and installed it. The very reason I bought the boxed copy was because I consciously avoid using Steam products.

What am I not comprehending in his increasingly absurd responses? I know he's being a little tongue-in-cheek with the relationship example, but his overall comparison appears to be ridiculously serious.
