I hate suprises

So I have been observing and acting as something like an aide for the last couple months for about 6-8 hours/week in a fifth grade classroom. For the last month or so, I have been teaching about 1/4 of the class (the class is split into 4 literature groups) in a small group. No biggie. Today there happened to be a sub in the classroom. About five minutes before the end of the class, the regular teacher comes in and asks me to go outside to talk. She asks me to teach a science unit (water pollution) for 40 minutes/day for three days next week (next week being the last week of the semester). Having a little common sense, I say yes (even though I really don't want to do it).

So what do I have? I have never taught anything to an entire class. I have 1 double sided handout with heavy (relatively) reading on water pollution, 1 handout with six multiple choice questions, and a third handout dealing with logic (related to the subject). Somehow, I have to figure out what the heck I will say and do for those three days. The kicker? I have to have this all planned out by the morning when I will have exactly 10 minutes to meet with the teacher before I have to get to work.

Suprises suck.

i found this. It's for older kids, but you can get ideas and adapt it.
I'm sure you'll find enough material to have fun with it...

I am currently on about the 150th search result for "water pollution" "lesson plan"

They're kids, it's not like you have to make a presentation for the board of directors.
Figure out what you have to say, and if it's too short for your 3 day schedule, you fill in extra time by making it more fun.

I have enough material for MAYBE two days, but there is no way I have enough for three days. Uggg

So do mine, but being a teacher is a great way to get rid of that.

good luck. you'll get through it just fine. and if worse comes to worse, tell the teacher you have 2 days of material and unless things go slower than planned, you don't think 3 days is necassary to cover the material. let us know how it goes.
