Who in the sam hell thought this was a good idea? I was trying to text somebody when the keyboard stopped responding, then a message popped up that said something like "You are using an old version of Swype, please update to continue using Swype". The keyboard is locked out and not useable at this point.

That in and of itself is stupid but it got worse. There was no way of updating through the swype options itself, and they pointed me to the Swype website to create an account. Swype came on my phone so I hadn't had to do this yet. Too bad the webpage is formatted so poorly that I can't register on any browser on my phone. The tick box is missing to accept the "terms and conditions".

Fine! I'll do it on the desktop. Go through the registration and get an email on my phone. I install the Swype downloader app. Then when I launch it, it tells me Swype is only supported on devices where it's pre-installed. It IS preinstalled! That's the only reason I have it in the first place... it came with the damn phone.

Now I can't use the keyboard and have to switch to something new... again. Who's bright idea was it to lock down the entire keyboard if it's not up to date?

There's a good reason Swype has been in beta for like 4 years now, or however long it's been. I don't think it'll ever be release ready. And from version to version it doesn't seem to be getting any better even. Swiftkey X >>>>> Swype.

Swype seemed to go downhill for me. I swear, the first beta I used on my Droid was better than the version that came with my Vibrant, and when they updated it, it got worse. If that trend continued, I can only imagine how bad it is now....

It was clunky when I first started it, but now that I have the dictionary where I wanted it I liked it.

I don't understand the Swiftkey to Swype comparison. They are completely different types of keyboards. A better comparison is SlideIT and Swype.

As posted on xda forums:
This worked for me:
1) googled swype apk and downloaded (version 3.26)
2) uninstalled swype via Titanium Back up
3) Reboot into download mode (CWM)
4) wipe cache and dalvik cache, reboot
5) install downloaded Swype APK

I don't think that's how it works. They only move when the carriers say so. IE if you want swype on your phone you (the carrier) pay them to do it with features XY and Z.

yeah

I can't get slideit to open up for me when I press the search key which is annoying...you have to tap in the text box. Any time the cursor is already there it should open up. Why don't aftermarket keyboards do this?

Thus the wonder of user choice. I personally love Swype.

me, too. i dont want a touchscreen device that doesnt have it. i have a nook color with the thumb keyboard...but id use the hell out of the thing if it had swype.

i use swype on my htc desire, its quick, and very convenient for me.

I just tried to update it on my SGSII. I went through that annoying process of signing up, downloading their installer, then going on it to update. Oh look, updates not supported on preinstalled devices. Well then, what a waste of my time. I guess to update I have to root my phone, uninstall it through all this fancy stuff, then come back and finally install the updated version. Why can't they just have it update to begin with?

I like swype as a keyboard but they really need to work on the structure of it.

That's what mine is. Is the SGSII version broken or something? I mean it DID come preinstalled on the phone... so why doesn't Swype know that? I'm fully rooted and everything, but I am NOT going through all that extra crap just to get Swype working. I liked it but it's not worth that much trouble.

I don't think it's broken. When I tried to update it the updater said that it wouldn't update because it was preinstalled. Which doesn't make sense, why should we have to be stuck with an old version just because we got it preinstalled on our phones? Their system is horribly flawed. It would make so much more sense if they just put it as an app on the app market, then it could actually be updated and used easily. And more people would get to use it.

I wouldn't care if we were stuck with the old version if we could still USE the old version... but it locks out

I tried it when the Droid X first came out and didn't really like it but I only gave it like 5 minutes, just before I returned the phone entirely. Now on the GNex it's not pre-installed because the screen size is not officially supported. But the XDA version (as mentioned above) has been working absolutely perfectly for me. I gave it another try because swiftkey and the other poke-n-play was just getting irritating if typing more than a few words at a time. Swype is ridiculously faster and you can use it with 1 hand. It's almost as quick as you're thinking the word and that's the biggest thing for me. Even without custom dictionary words it has been very accurate for me. I don't care if it's beta or if I got a hacked version. The poke keyboards are horrible. You're complaining about the update and maintenance features, but its practicality in use is unmatched.

Swype just crashes everytime I try to use it, yet another reason why I hate android. IP5 can't come soon enough.

I think the comparison between Swype and Swiftkey is valid because they are both ... keyboards.

Keyboards in general are a thing of preference (I still buy IBM/Lenovo keyboards for all my desktops), but I don't understand the love for Swype. I bang on the screen, and Swiftkey manages to read my mine 90% of the time. This is on an OG Droid, where the touchscreen accuracy is junk, too. It also provides prediction for the hardware keyboard, which is a plus for me (but might not for the people who hate HW keyboards).

The idea behind Swype is awesome and while it is working it's great but the thing is that it's not working for the most of the time and shows and does strange things

Did you write that using Swype?

It took me a while to get used to it, but now I can't imagine using my phone without it. Can do things so much faster now and one-handed without much difficulty when I need to.

Oh, mine hasn't locked out. I just don't like this current version because it's too inaccurate for me. That's why I want to update to the new version which supposedly has better accuracy and dragon dictation or whatever it's called.
