Gov. guys gave Tesla (The automoble company) all that tax money($465 million) to develop an electric car when it has 416hp and can go from 0-60mph in 4.3 seconds. Their earlier car the Roadster costs $100,000 according to Automobile magazine. The Dept of Energy gave them the money. When will their cars cost lower for the common man? I can't justify them getting all that taxpayer money. Can you?

I would like to have a solar powered Kayak with a telsa engine to cross the ocean and sail around Polynesia.

Please stop posting. It is a LOAN. The car has won multiple prestigious awards. The company still has an uphill battle, but they are doing a commendable job. As tech progresses, the cars will start getting reasonably priced.

Are you even aware of the program that Tesla was given the loan under? It was the Advanced Technology Vehicles Manufacturing Loan Program which was a $25 Billion dollar loan program funded by Congress to help vehicles manufactured in the US meet higher mileage requirements and lessen US dependence on foreign oil. So far out of this 8+ Billion has been loaned out, 5.9 Billion to ford, 1.6 Billion to Nissan, 465 Million to Tesla, and 528.7 Million to Fisker. I don't hear much bitching about Ford and Nissan and government money. This is a specific program to spur development of higher mileage vehicles. Not a bad idea IMHO.

I have a flashlight that is powered by darkness. Of course as soon as you turn it on it stops working.
If you just made that up you are fvcking awesome. BLEW MY MIND.

Anyway half a billion dollars is toilet paper money for the federal government and yet now we see Tesla being a real, actual car company that makes real, actual cars that people seem to want. Not many, crazy expensive, but considering how little money they actually are using I think they are driving the industry ahead.

there were two that showed up to a local car show about a month ago.

Leaving the show they made it an impressive 5 miles before breaking down on the side of the highway. I will admit, they looked very nice sitting by the side of the road

The Tesla Model S can easily compete with the luxury sporty cars in their segment on price and features.

I think they are doing a commendable job and I would personally buy one if i was in the market for that type of vehicle.

While I personally think the Tesla vehicles are borderline junk, albeit pretty junk, this is a drop in the bucket budget-wise. What I would like to see is some real generational leaps forward in electric cars, but I have the feeling we're just waiting on battery tech.

Maybe ~8 billion on battery research with the best minds would have been better spent, even if were an outright spending bill rather than a 'loan'.

Ford, Nissan, the big guys will pay back their loans. I don't see a cold chance in hell of Tesla repaying anything meaningful.

Especially for Obama who lusts after debt as a way to crip capitalism (being he's a Marxist nutter)

Hmm. What does that have to do with Tesla's funding?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Advanced_Technology_Vehicles_Manufacturing_Loan_Program

Tesla got it's $ from a 2008 program, Obama had no say one way or the other.

At least with Tesla we *might* get the loan back, even if I am somewhat personally doubtful of that. Try doing that with either of the unfunded trillion+ wars.

You know what the real problem in Washington is? Every single politician that is a member of the Republican and Democratic party. Well, perhaps there are a handful that aren't complete assholes, but by and large I think all they truly care about is their own corrupt selves primo facto. A distant second is their party. And not even on the radar is honesty of doing the right thing for their country.

It's a loan, chill.

Also, the Model S isn't "borderline junk", I've ridden in one and it was very impressive.

FIRST it is a loan like others said, second this is a perfect example of the self entitled immediate gratification mentality that most people have today who have no idea of the research, development, and costs required to make a viable electric vehicle that doesn't look like a golf cart Smart Car wannabe.

The early adopters are paying now just like they paid when the pentium-90 was the fastest processor and computers were very expensive.

If General Motors didn't kill off the EV1 that came out in the late 90's (which by the way the former CEO Rick Wagoner admitted was one of his worst decisions) and continuously improved the car every model year and promoted it as a long term solution, perhaps we would have had the option for a reasonably priced electric car with decent range and performance as well as aesthetics.

I would also point out that the guy that runs Tesla is the same one that runs SpaceX. He has done very well in getting these companies up and running and certainly is a very good candidate for paying back a loan.
