I hate those image verification things

I'm talking about the ones that have the letters rotated sideways, upside down, etc. I can never figure out if the letters are capitalized or not, and sometimes can not even tell what letter they are. I just spent 5 minutes trying out different images, trying to get one where I could figure out what the fvck they wanted me to enter.

They are complete bullsh!t. How am I supposed to know that the d is actually a c with an l overlapping it, or that the 6 is actually a retarded g. It makes me so frustrated.

I read about this elaborate scam in which a guy setup a porn site where the only requirement for looking at each pic was to type in the text for one of those images. The catch was, the images were being delivered from a storefront like Amazon, and appeared whenever you try to enter a new credit card number.

The guy running the website was trying to commit credit card fraud by using random credit card numbers, and was using the porn site to have the viewers figure out all the verification images for him to speed up the process.

You don't get it. Internet forms take about 15 seconds to fill out, but then I have to analyze this stupid image that is harder to correctly interpret than a Rorschach test. I type in the characters, completely confident in my analytical and observational skills, but I am told that I am wrong repeatedly. I am RIGHT, dammit! It's the image and the creator's interpretation that is wrong.

I installed a CAPTCHA and *bam* all the spam stopped. Every person who wants to add interactivity / accounts to their site has a choice:

a) Inconvenience their users w/ a 5 second CAPTCHA
b) Suffer crippling spam with hours of paid labor to clean it up and large incurred data costs.

Sound so unreasonable now?

What software did you use? I'd like to check it out. It would save me a bunch of time.

I simply used the OCR built into Adobe Acrobat Pro.

Why not just use the audio file so it can tell you exactly what letter and number each character is? A lot easier!

Appreciated it, was much easier (img file was something like 3+5 =?)

Hopefully these kind of things won't be around much longer and they'll start using a new method. I came across one yesterday where you're given a choice between 4 pictures and you have to click on the one which corresponds with what word they give you.
