this guy who writes a blog for ncaa football that i read has been writing about his son lately. his son got in a horrible car accident and has been in a hospital for 70+ days. everyday in his blog he praises god for his son's ability to recovery and thanks god for his compassion and for his son to recover.

if god was truly compassionate, wouldn't god have avoided the the crash entirely? the son is looking at years of rehab probably and still can't speak clearly.

It lets people think that "It's all part of the plan." Basically it's a shoulder to cry on and beleive that someone else is controlling things, therefore you can do nothing about it.

I personally don't think God had anything to do in the matter, but for the sake of conversation it could be the belief God granted us free will and it was free will that got him in the accident in the first place (i.e. him speeding; the driver that hit him drinking and driving; the driver he was with fucking around; etc).

I was reading in a thread the other day where the OP was thanking god for being able to move back into his house after a fire...it was HIT BY LIGHTINING...I tried to impress upon him the irony but he was totally lost, he thought I just misunderstood him.

It makes him feel better. Thinking god shouldn't have allowed it to happen in the first place would not make him feel better. There's not much more to it than that.

not a bad way to put it. I personally think things happen for a reason. Even if for no other reason than having a good attitude alone, its a good thing that the father is able to be so optimistic. But I believe that he is correct for praising God even in the midst of his trials.

The "test" excuse is a cop-out for not actually having a reason for it, a common sound-bite from religious institutions and authorities to keep you from questioning it. Plus, you're told that if you disagree, you've failed the test because you have no faith. Personally, I think it's just plain stupid that people are WILLING to swallow that kind of BS just because they're desperate for meaning in everything. It's just horrible, there is no meaning to it.
