3 10+ year old cars, no car payment and trouble free (mostly). Never left us stranded.

A string of horrible cars and then nearly 10 years of leasing for me. Trying my luck with a used Volvo for now

Ohh god, I'm not sure I would take my bets with a new volvo, but good luck.

70s/80s volvo on the other hand...those things are undestructable (when treated right).

2001 with 180K miles. 2 months in, no issues so far! :awe:

I'm pretty sure nobody in real life has 6 months salary sitting in checking. Majority of people live pay check to pay check if that.

I hear ya, man... Over the past two weeks, my wife's car was broken into and I had a plumbing leak that left water stains on my ceiling. That's a good $2,000 in expenses right there.

I'm pretty sure I will NEVER EVER get to that point. Impossible.

I think of my 401k as "emergency fund" as I simply don't see myself retiring.....EVER

Some even claim it is not safe if you don't have the rotors done at the same time as pads. It's basically a scam to separate you from your money. .

/this

careful some places even claim they can't release the car until its done also. I had tires put on my car recently. They claimed I needed new pads/rotors and they were so bad they couldn't give me back the keys. I just redid both the pads/rotors at the start of the summer so they were still new.

i asked for my keys and they claimed it was a safety issue and that unless i had new rotors/pads put on they couldn't release the car. Until i pulled out my phone and started to call 911..heh

WOW

sounds like a really shitty place

AGain, some cars come with rotors that are too thin (like VWs) and they do need replacement...but most cars can have their rotors resurfaced. Matter a fact, I'm sure some of these places simply resurface and charge you for "new".

Mechanics rank right up there with the biggest scums around....

In checking? That's just silly. I had about 6 months worth in my ING account before I bought my condo, and then my expenses shot up like a rocket. Damn money pit.

LOL- I was like that some time ago. We still don't have an emergency fund---whatever is in our checking is it. No savings account, but I do the max on our 401K so I can retire on a island or something

Ha! Just picked up the van and I took a look at my bill. They actually dropped another $100 off without me asking due to the circumstances. Nice! Taking that into account, it actually wasn't THAT bad of a price:

2 rear calipers- warranty
4 flange bolts- 3.50
1 set of ceramic pads - 100
2 rotors - 165
2 disk brake caliper adapters - 124
labor - 135

I priced everything out locally and it's only like a $60 premium + the labor cost, so it came out to around $450. I guess it could have been worse.

Don't worry, you are not the only one.

Heck I just paid off all of my debt few months ago....and got hit with the dentist bill.

Planning on paying that off before saving ANYTHING.

I have new roof/boiler hanging over my head too within next year or 2......fun fun fun

Those must be some SERIOUS rotors. If I were you I'd argue the labor. But it's up to you if driving back and yelling for an hour then calling corporate ad yelling for another hour is worth the chance of saving $135.

Why did they charge you for caliper carriers? That's BS

If they are replacing a part for recall reasons that needs a bracket.....that's their call.

Take a look at your rotors and make sure they are even there > call Corporate and confirm.

I looked. I have to say the new rotors and pads are seriously heavy duty---they're like 50% bigger than the last set and as large as the front brake sets now.

The part wasn't a recall so there's only a limited amount they could do.

Well they've convinced you that you needed to pay for your warranty work instead of Chrysler. I guess they did their job.

I agree

Not only that, they are getting money from Chrysler AND OP at the same time.

There is no need for rear brakes to be that big. Heck my MPV has rear DRUMS and we have 120k miles (they are original).

Most cars brakes are heavy front bias.

Anyways, what's done is done...

Tip with the dentist: There's a credit service called CareCredit that will give you 6-12-or 18 month free financing on medical bills. We use it a lot and it helps keep from draining your cash on surprise gigantic bills.
