How is it your fault if they redesigned the caliper? And who cares if they redesigned it anyway? It's either covered by warranty or it isn't.
Damn. You're going to have to ditch the family if you ever want to afford those sunglasses.
The taxes are planned, it is your fault for not anticipating you had to pay tax one way or another.
As for the brakes, it sounds like you got scammed by the dealer. I highly doubt the newly-designed caliper doesn't work with the OEM rotor for a vehicle that is under warranty.
The tax thing wasn't planned- I had never bought a car out of state before, and because that state didn't have an agreement with our state, you have to pay all taxes when you get your plates (you can't roll them into the loan). It was a pretty hefty chunk on change. Live and learn on that one.
The brakes aren't a scam- it's a Chrysler Town and Country, and it came from the factory with brakes that were way too small for its hulking frame. Therefore, brakes would last 20K miles tops. Chrysler got in some hot water over this and didn't do a recall, but instead a "service bulletin", where if the brakes became a problem they would replace them with a redesigned caliper. The new caliper takes a different size of rotor/pads, and you have to have the same sizes on the axle. Therefore 2 calipers + 2 rotors + 4 pads had to be replaced.
What sucks is the calipers were covered by the warranty, but I had to fork out for the pads/rotors, and labor on those. Yet another reason I hate Chrysler and will never buy another one of their products.
So in the same week 7 cavities + brakes + taxes = broke
I just donated $10,000 to you but you have to redeem it within 2 seconds.

This is the main reason I don't own a car. Tiny things seems to break often, and you have to pay a huge amount of cash to get it fixed.
They should pay for the pads/rotors if there is a recall, that's not your problem.
I would've told the dealer to just change the pads/rotors free of charge if that's the case....screw that.
Although to be honest with you, I would've just done it myself...bought the parts for 150-200 bucks.
Look at the bright side, at least you had the money to pay for it all/not take out loan.
It's not a recall, it's a service bulletin, so the pads and rotors aren't covered.
Also, I would have did it myself, but the van is under warranty, so I thought it would have been covered. The caliper was is such bad condition that it wasn't driveable after they took it apart. Just a bad situation all around.

Love America but maybe buy a Japanese car next time. You don't run into this shat.
Yes you will. There is no such a thing as American or Japanese anymore. Sure there is the whole "country where company is registered in" but in general cars are made all over the globe. Heck factories are now assembly lines and parts are made all over the place.
The gaps in reliability AND quality have been so minimized that they are not even worth talking about.
Besides, the 2 "entities" that feed you "reliability" BS (JD Powers, Consumer Reports) have a long history of being paid off by manufactures. Besides the fact that their studies are worthless if you take a closer look. Some things that break/go wrong have NOTHING to do with reliability.....and first 2-3 years of car ownership are the LEAST of my worries (while the car is under warranty)......I want to know how well the car does 5-10 years from now as I like to keep them.
I drive two Hondas as my dd's. I don't trust American car companies. Sure my Japanese cars might be made in America or Japan but I trust Honda to get it right. Chrysler, Chevrolet no. Ford trucks yes ford cars no.

My van is a 2008, so it was made when Chrysler was broke. They cut a LOT of corners (the plastics are terrible, the trim is awful, etc), so this is to be expected from that era. The newer American cars after 2010 or so are so stepped up in quality you can't even compare.
I'm still hating on Chrysler though. They make way too many dumb decisions (GM is a close second).
If you were to ask me, Asians make many more dumb decisions than Americans right now.
Just take a look at their awful looking cars.....just me though. Honda is in a race with Nissan for the ugliest cars on the planet (right next to BMW).
I just bought a car out of state and had to pay taxes out of pocket (they weren't included in the loan---OUCH). Then the kids suddenly needed fillings. Then my wife's van needs tires. Then her brake caliper went out, I take it to the dealership under warranty, and the caliper is covered but the new "redesigned" caliper that replaces it doesn't work with the pads/rotors in place, so they have to do a complete rear brake job for $550.
All of this in a 3 week span.

That's why you work. Do you not want a house either? You think$550 is bad. Wait till your roof needs to be redone or your plumbing takes a crap. You'd be praying for $550

This is why I like leasing cars - yeah, no equity or car at the end of the lease, but minimal problems & surprise bills too. I bought a car a couple months ago and I know it's just a ticking timebomb for money to disappear into :whiste:
Try getting hit with about $30,000 unexpected in your own divorce, helping another with theirs and then moving both parties across country and overseas.
No wonder you're bitter
