We just spent an hour trying to unblock facebook while keeping various protocols blocked. Now, all FTP traffic is blocked, and Websense tells us that it's allowing all traffic for FTP's. The kicker--facebook has nothing to do with protocols and we never touched anything to do with ftp's....

*sigh

Internet content filters usually used by schools or work places. One way around it is to use a webpage translator. But that doesn't work all that well.

I am a doctor and work in a hospital. Websense blocks out critical medical information that I need to practice. My IS Dept. completely ignores our problems with it. I posted here once requesting help with a workaround and got banned... sigh. I feel your pain.

It's just real bad when the admins can't even get the filtering the way they want it without dumping loads of precious time into it. After working with it for a while, I've begun to understand why many admins just tell people tough luck when a website they need is filtered.

That reminds of the time in high school when our teacher tried to research Roman mythology but nearly every site was blocked due to "non-traditional religion".

When Google put their chat feature into gmail, websense blocked gmail for "chat/IM". There were practically no lectures that day as many teachers used gmail to transfer files from home to school.

If the company trusts a person enough to hire them, then why is there any need for websense? Like the doctor above, they trust him enough to let him treat patients, but they don't trust him enough to let him online without a filter. Doesn't make sense

That's why you don't post it on a 200k member forum..you find the ones that know what they are talking about, plead your case, and see if they help you over IM

What legitimate company (and I assume yours is because it's using a commercial web filter) needs to unblock Facebook?

Yeah I hate websense. There's one trick I've been using to get around it, but it won't work with all sites. Are we not allowed to mention that here?

I wouldn't.

If people ask you personally it's your call.

I don't know what it costs but I've had access 25 miles offshore and the speed was around 1meg down and 130k up. You can't use a 132,000 feet ethernet cord so it's a blast to have!

It sounds like you guys don't know how to administer websense.

And why would you have a web filter then unblock something like facebook? Are you unblocking myspace and youtube too?

Isn't that like $80 a month and kinda slow?

It's acceptable, and if you are in a good coverage area it can be downright awesome

Your high school's IT dept doesn't know what it's doing.

Want a web filter/proxy that is easy to manage, and WORKS?

Look up St. Bernard iPrism. The initial purchase costs the same as websense, but comes on its own appliance. Then the following annual renewals are a few thousand cheaper. It also works in transparent mode so you can just put it between your firewall and first switch without any special routing, lookups, or changes to your web browsers. It will also authenticate against active directory automatically - no prompts (for IE only).
