I hate when people I don't know make stupid, lame observations to me.

I was on the elevator today with some guy and it went nonstop till we got to our floor. Of course he had to say "Looks like we got the express." Is that now a required comment whenever there are no stops on an elevator? I wanted to smack the guy. They say either that or "Looks like we're taking the local.

I know, I have issues...

This may help you...

<< One of the things Ford Prefect had always found hardest to understand about human beings was their habit of continually stating and repeating the obvious, as in It's a nice day, or You're very tall, or Oh dear you seem to have fallen down a thirty-foot well, are you alright? At first Ford had formed a theory to account for this strange behaviour. If human beings don't keep exercising their lips, he thought, their mouths probably seize up. After a few months' consideration and observation he abandoned this theory in favour of a new one. If they don't keep on exercising their lips, he thought, their brains start working. >>

Me, too. Only slightly more than posts. (j/k) Besides, it's not obligatory to respond.

i attract all the people that feel the need to talk to SOMEONE anywhere. like i was in the Mall of America (back when i lived in MN) and i am standing by a railing waiting for my mom and dad. some dude walks up and is like..."yeah my parents tell me i need to get out more and make some friends. they tell me i shouldn't sit at home so much" and the guy was like 40. ummm why did you pick me? like i care...
so i know where you are coming from. but i am altogether cynical and anti-social so take that as you will. at least it was just a comment on an elevator and not an attempt at an extended conversation. i get that at work...doesn't really bother me all that much i guess.

heh. i agree. it bugs me too. i never respond. don't even wanna try to think of what to say back.
i just think that they are insecure with the damn silence and just have to blurb something out to feel better about themselves.

I have days like that, too... I just don't feel like being bothered sometimes. It's a pain because you really don't want to be like that, but it's just an instinct to not want to have anything to do with small talk. I get like that with my family, and I don't like it

Thanks azazyel for the Douglas Adams quote. Dunno if it helped X951 but it sure helped me! Remember <<mostly harmless>>, the entry description of Earth in the Hitchhiker's Guide? Well small talk is like that, just harmless so I don't let it get to me.

Ok I take that back. The other day, this girl at the cafeteria who I'm acquainted with asked me, "What do you do all day? All I see is you staring so intently at the computer all the time." Gee thanks Captain Obvious. Am I supposed to respond to that? :frown:

I was on an airplane a couple days ago going from Detroit to Madison, WI. Up in first class, the guy sitting next to me says nothing the whole way, which is fine with me. I have no interest talking to strangers about nothing. When we get up to get off the plane he says, "So do you live here in Madison?".

What? Why do you care? Why are you opening your pie-hole?

People that say stuff just because they either like to hear themselves talk, or can't stay occupied thinking inside their head bug the heck out of me.

Heheheh, that makes sense...

I don't usually have a problem with small talk, I just tend to avoid it, but I'm having a pretty crappy day. My friend just sent me a list of a bunch of jokes so now I'm a bit more happy.

Another thing I don't understand... when someone says "Hi how are you doing?" do they really want to know how you are doing? I always thought it was just a greeting and always replied with "What's up." Now I notice that some people reply with "Hi, I'm doing fine, how are you?" That's just too much work to say hello.

It's an interesting phenomenom, but I think that American society currently has a taboo against silence. How well do you think a Calvin Coolidge would fare in an election today? That said, I don't particularly like small talk either, it's always rather awkward. (I've always thought that "awkward" was a rather awkwardly spelled word, haven't you?) If I'm just around strangers who I'll probably not see again, I usually avoid it. On the other hand, small talk can be a good "opener" in situations in which you are aclimating yourself to a new group of people (ie, a college course or a new job). But it has to make some sort of progression beyond talking for talking's sake after a while.

Does anyone here see the irony in X951 making an announcement to 600+ anonymous strangers that he doesn't like anonymous strangers making announcements to him?
