While some people will hate Windows just for the sake of hating it, I am totally with windows 8 haters. I did not even try it, but just looking at it, and looking at videos, I know I would hate it. They pretty much took the concept of a usable desktop UI, and threw it out the window. I'm sure it's not bad on a tablet, but on a real computer to do real work, forget it.

One should not have to buy 3rd party software just to make their computer be usable. The OS should do that.

This is a good video on it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WTYet-qf1jo

The best are these claims that if you install 3rd party start menu everything is back to perfect.

Well it is not. You still have all the remaining crap: PC settings, lame metro apps, charm bars, hidden settings, etc.

I'm not a fan of windows 8, but it doesn't do anything to inspire that kind of anger either. I think I'd go back to win7 before linux though. I've learned a lot about linux since building my NAS. Enough to know that I don't care to use it anywhere I don't have to.

Being stupid again like Lupi and others here? Freeware solves the problem and makes it better than Win7.

I use it on a touch PC, and I like it for that. Unfortunately, it came on my laptop by default, and I didn't feel like paying more to go to Windows 7. :\

they've improved performance, improved security, improved the update system so that it makes less of a mess, all while continuing to improve features (better task manager, file copy system, USB 3 support) and add features (native image mounting, SMB Multichannel - seriously don't like 7 anymore because of this)

I even think they cleaned up the desktop interface and prefer it over 7 for the most part, so unless there's some sort of hardware incompatibility (I have a relatively new laptop with switchable graphics that is a huge PITA to get 8.1 running properly on) or you were relying on some obscure feature, you're probably just too set in your ways and might want to consider exercising your brain plasticity, although switching to Linux is likely going to do a lot more for you there.

Please tell me how much I had to pay for my free, 3 and a half second download of Classic Shell, and my 20 second install/config.

I'll wait.

Sounds like its time to invest in an apple.
Kool thing about apple, you get stuff done, not wasting time screwing with the os.
And you never need shells, bobs, thingies, bing bang booms, or an open window with a long drop to the pavement.

I have a sister that has one pc with windows XP, and another pc with windows 7, and still another with windows 8. Just to do all she needs to do.
Or, one could just buy an apple.

If it really is free, enjoy the spyware then. One thing I don't miss from the windows ecosystem is that everything that is "free" usually has a catch.

Windows Vista is actually better than Windows 8.Vista received unfair hate even after it was fixed after SP1.However Anandtech community recognizes that Vista is not the abomination that others made it out to be.So for me Windows 7>Vista >Windows 8.
Will have to wait and see how bad Windows 10 will be.

So in other words, you have no idea what you're talking about. At all.

Carry on then.

My SSD died on me last week so I did a clean install of Windows 8.1 on a new SSD. I downloaded 14 different "free" programs one of which was Classic Shell start menu replacement. All of the software was uploaded to virustotal and scanned with hitman pro and emsisoft anti-malware locally. All of the software was clean. I also scanned my computer with malwarebytes and I have no malware. Best of all my computer boots to the desktop and I have a highly customizable start menu that looks and acts like Windows 7.

Here's a screeny of my old install.

Edit: Here is the sticky with a list of start menu replacements. http://forums.anandtech.com/showthread.php?t=2283053

Except 8 is the new Vista, getting "unfair hate". 10 is shaping up to be the new 7 which perfects upon its predecessor but is otherwise practically the same thing everyone said they hated.

Well that's surprising, but my point still stands, one should not have to install 3rd party stuff just to get use out of an OS. It can really be hit and miss as to what to even trust.

If you do a little research before you download anything and download from a reliable source and scan it before you run it you will be fine 99.9% of the time. This method has worked fine for me for a number of years.

I do agree that they shouldn't have forced the start screen on everyone. I was totally lost when I first saw it because I was used to doing something the same way for years. I couldn't get accustomed to the new GUI so I ditched it in a hurry. At least Ballmer now knows it's important to give users options

My software is smarter than I am thread. If Windows 8(.1) is giving you issues you will kill yourself in Linux.

Start is back and it works nearly like Windows 7. You never have to look at Metro or metro Apps. It goes directly to the desktop.

Windows 8.1 with Classic Shell(free, ...as in free) & no looking back or regrets.
I had Windows 8.1 on my tablet, so I was no stranger to the newer interface, but Classic Shell made me put 8.1 on my desktop. Makes me love 8.1 over 7 any day of the week.

Sooo, you use the completely stock OS to do absolutely everything you do? No 3rd party software at all?

Your Server builds are more impressive than I first figured if you're doing 100% everything without a singular additional Linux package installed!
