how long were you restricted from lifting stuff?

Had hernia surgery this year. For an abdominal hernia, not an inguinal . . . but I was not allowed to lift anything >25lbs for 6 weeks.

Trust me, you won't WANT to lift anything that heavy for at least the first three.

Maybe you are just growing a second penis? You are a manly man after all. And from your op and stories I think its clear you have been exposed to dangerous levels of radiation.

Came here, expected lots of "10/10, would read again," left disappointed.

Feel better, Ned! Good luck.

thanks - I'll have the official word on Tuesday when I see the Dr.

I think if surgery is required I'd like to get it over with sooner rather than later

that's what I was hoping to hear. Based on previous surgical experience, I expect to be weight restricted 6 weeks, but hopefully after that I'll be cleared to hit the gym again at full capacity.

The doctor I used only did hernia surgeries. That's it, day in and day out. I asked him about activities that I shouldn't be doing afterwards and he said there are no restrictions. That the repair is immediately usable, just stop if it starts to hurt too much. My understanding is that it's actually good to start using it immediately because that will cut down on the formation of scar tissue which could restrict you later on.

I'd be curious to hear what your doctor suggests, and which technique he'll be using for the repair.

I'll try to remember Tuesday to post the results of the visit. If I forget, PM me a reminder

Curious, what is the current cost for this, and what did you pay back then ?

I had a hernia operation done in 2000. The cost was paid for by my employer. It was $5k.

I was out of it for a few weeks.

I believe the total cost - doctor, anesthesiologist, surgery center, etc. - came to about $8k. I think I ended up paying $1000 or so out of pocket. No idea what it would run now.

the wife & I have nearly paid our deductable this year, so assuming surgery is required I'm going to try to get it done before year's end (hopefully much sooner than that)

I had one of those fixed about two years ago. I was on my ass for a month and walked with a cane for a couple months after, but I understand that most people heal more quickly than that. Still, it's going to suck for a while after, and you might as well get a cane now so that you can try it out (i.e. make sure it's the right height for you) before it hurts to move anything below your sternum. That's what I did, and I was quite happy with what twenty bucks at CVS got me. However, someone like yourself with flair may want to consider something with more class.

***UPDATE 20140819***
It's official - I have an inguinal hernia on my right side. I have an appointment with a surgeon on Thursday. Hopefully I can get the surgery scheduled ASAP.

The lengths some people will go to to get multiple people to mess around with their junk...

Good luck though.

Damn. Too bad it wasn't an extra penis. You know, then could burst out Alien-style at just the right moment.

Well how bad was it?

I haven't had the surgery yet... it's scheduled for next month. As for how bad hernias can get, the doctor described it in detail... don't go there. Just make sure you get it checked out if you have even the slighted suspicion that you have one.

Oh I see. You said you see the doctor Thursday, I assumed that was the date of surgery. I know it will suck though, I've been there, and I wasn't kidding about that cane.

Degenerative hernias are usually related to an underlying collagen deficiency. So my advice would be to increase intake of collagen forming foods and supplements.

Otherwise those suffering from hernias have a higher probability of aortic aneurysms later in life. Sadly most doctors don't know enough about science or nutrition to ever bother making the connection.

High coincidence of inguinal hernias and abdominal aortic aneurysms.

Increased prevalence of abdominal aortic aneurysm in patients undergoing inguinal hernia repair compared with patients without hernia receiving aneurysm screening

So don't let your doctors make you think mesh (as an easy fix) somehow solves your underlying problem.

how long were you restricted from lifting stuff?

Honestly its been so long I don't remember. You don't feel like lifting anything heavy for several weeks. I believe I had it done 25 years ago now that I think about it. Do your best to walk around the next day, yes it hurts but walking makes you feel better after doing it. I still occasionally get funny pinches or the area has a minor burning feel if I lift something awkward. Honestly that only happens about twice a year. Its a pretty simple surgery and the mesh has a rapid recovery time plus it won't need to be redone every 10-15 years like the stitching together method. You do end up with a scar to the left or right of the Weiner. Its a line kind of scar. When I was single I used to point it out so women wouldn't think its something weird. The scar on me is clean it looks like a pen mark not too disturbing.

Edit: I just remembered stairs were more difficult to use than I expected. Try to avoid them for the first week or two. I remember I could go up or down stairs but it took forever. You'll use stairs like a vision impaired man in his 90s.

I can't wait for the story of NN's grizzled old neighbor catching him gingerly walking around with a cane after this.
