At nine am tomorrow, and I am sooo scared! I have been a stay at home mom for the last 10 years basically, and this will be my first real job since then. It's for a payroll assistant, so if I screw up, alot of people will be mad at me. It pays 8 bucks an hour to start, which around here is really good, since minimum wage (5.15) is the average wage. So, any tips on the interview? I haven't done this in so long, I really am worried that my lack of work is going to be a problem, hopefully they can see past that to my actual skills.

wow, good luck!

my mom went out and started working after around 14 years of staying at home (got a UW CS degree at that) and i'm damn proud of her.

i guess the only advice i give is to smile and take time to think of a thoughtful reply to their questions. not necessarily what you think they want to hear... it's good to be honest, just take time to think of a good way to word things.

btw, where do you live? i'm curious as to the location at which min. wage is average...

oh and i guess there is a limit to honesty, but i'm assuming you don't have any particularly evil thoughts

You will do fine.

Be all about the facts, and smile! If you look comfortable under the scrutiny of an interview then you show confidence not only in yourself, but your 5k11z as well. Employers respect that.

Good luck.

Remember these things:

They can't ask you whether you are married or have kids, it is against federal laws of discrimination. If they do, tell them that you don;t think your marital status will have any affect on the job, but if you are from a small town, they probably alrady know your marital status anyway.

Think about all of the money management, organization, time management, and "personnel skills involved in running a household from day to day. Use those skills to your advantage

myputer: You know the motto around here. The men are men and most of the women are too. It may just work, you never know.

Frosty: Its a branch of NBT. I am sure you have a local branch, everyone seems to around here. I am closer to Binghamton than Rochester though.

me too

I have one on monday and if I get the job, it'll be the best one I've ever had (security guard)

Like people have said, you have to stress the skills you have that you can relate to the job, such as being responsible, trustworthy etc. and give examples on how you've shown that.

Another good idea is to learn a bit about the company and what might be expected of you.

Other than that, smile, don't mumble, be eloquent and be yourself.

Good luck

well you wouldn't want to mess up on the more basic inquiries such as:

have good 1.5ish minute answers for questions like: why are you getting back into the workforce now (which also answers why you left)

why you want to work for XYZ company (translation: tell me your skills AND how they can help for this position)

Should learn to translate what it is they really are asking through the question.

Your job is to come out of there with a 2nd interview upcoming, OR the offer. You have to assert and sell sell sell.

Also, just as important about answering questions is asking.

They will ask if you have any. You better have at least 2.

Try to come off as a warm person, have to learn to act that way.

If you're called for an interview that already kind of means ur good enough for the position skillset wise, but do they like you in person as a person is partly why you're called in.
