I have a legal question

I got injured two years ago from a rollerblading accident where I ended up breaking my arm. For that I was given a prescription for Oxycodone. I ended up ordering two from my local pharmacy, with half a bottle left of the stuff since August of 2007. Fast-forward to last night where I had a dinner party at my house. After all the visitors left I noticed that both bottles of oxycodone, the empty and half-filled one, were gone.

How fast do these drugs expire and what will happen to me, legally, if someone took it and became ill?

nothing, as long as it was in your medicine cabinet you are fine. Basically, this is very typical of addicts.

So long as you are not serving these things to people I doubt you will have any issues, It's medicine

Oh yeah, ATOT DISCLAIMER, this is not legal advice, but advice from a internet persona

I doubt someone can just "refill" your prior prescription, Isn't it a bit more complicated then that?

At least now you know one of your friends is a drug addict.

Why would you be responsible? Someone steals your prescription medicine and OD's on it that's their problem.

Do you have any idea who would have taken it? If so, I sure as hell wouldn't have them back at my house again.

The pills just get less potent over time.

Nothing legal for you. How many people were there that you didn't know?

Yeah, sad for them. BTW, what do people see in that drug? When I took it, it did nothing for me except take the obvious pain I had away. What does it do for you if you aren't in pain?

Just an fyi:

Q. What is the shelf life of oxycodone?

A. Here's what I found from what appears to be a reputable medical website:
Store below 25°C. Shelf-life for all strengths is 3 years when stored at or below 25°C.

Drugs are escapism. Most anything will do.

If that were me I'd be pissed. The fact that someone that I consider to be a friend has the audacity to steal something from my home, yeah. There'd be hell to pay.

Kinda like this but I'd be sad that somebody I knew would steal from me.

Sad that somebody I trusted would steal would be very upsetting.

It's not the money issue, it's the trust that has been broken.

There's no legal consequences for you, just the trust issue.

Bummer!

Addicts don't just eat the pills. I think you crush them up first, and it becomes more of a high as opposed to a pain reliever.

It would be good for you to know who lifted the pills. They can't be trusted in your house, and you may find valuables missing the next time...

I'd consider telling the police.

A douche that would steal might also lie if caught with them and say you gave, or sold the oxy to them. Or somebody gets injured in a car wreck, or overdoses, or children get hold of them whatever, and they find the bottles with your name on it the police might come looking for you. Saying they were stolen then might not be believable.

Maybe I'm just a 'worrier'?

Edit: Inadvertantly left out the word 'not' in fron of 'believable' in my last sentence (major difference).

Also, wanted to say that where I live 2 people were just prosecuted for 2nd degree homicide/murder. They were convicted of supplying the drugs to people who OD'd and died as a result. In the last case they were friends (not a dealer type thing).

Yeah, would it be a good idea to file a police report in case your name comes up later in an investigation? Seems like this would be a good way to cover your ass in case something bad happens and the Rx gets traced back to you.

Addicts don't just eat the pills. I think you crush them up first, and it becomes more of a high as opposed to a pain reliever.

Oxycodone, the active ingredient in OxyContin, by it's nature does both.

By crushing these pills you rid them of the time release coating and can receive all the active ingredient immediately.

Some are manufactured where the time release coating can be removed with a little water or saliva and then chewed to get the immediate release.

The trust factor is the major damage done in this situation.

Maybe I'm just a 'worrier'?

Yep.

OP, there's no need for anything except vigilance.

It's an opiate I'd imagine it just fucks you up. They have a high street value of about $.50/mg so if you had hundreds of them you may have just had a low-life who knew they could sell them.

Ya, I'll second filing a police report. After all, it wouldn't hurt, and it's covering your back in case something, however unlikely, does happen.

Could just be someone who knows a dealer and needs to make money. There are many conclusions you can draw from this scenario.

Try to find out who took the pills, and get them some help.

After you slap them around for a while for stealing from you.

I hope you're not serious.
