and I haven't begun the actual typing yet. I know ten pages isn't a lot to many of you, but this is my first semester of college, and as we all know, highschool is a joke in terms of actual education. Luckily, the essay is based on the Great Depression, and as you probably guessed, it's for my History class. I should be able to just rehash most of the information found at wikipedia and do well (he doesn't seem to grade hard on written work). My plan is to tackle it tonight and hopefully only have one or two pages to finish off tomorrow morning. Then I will look for any grammatical errors. Any tips on how to fill the pages up quickly? I think I'll first summarize WWI and the roaring twenties, then explain how they led up to the great depression, then describe the great depression itself and its effects on the middle-class Americans. Or should I just focus on the great depression and its effects on the middle-class citizens? (which is what the essay is suppose to be mainly about)

Also, anyone submit a paper to turnitin.com? I have no clue how to and my professor hasn't responded to my email (but he does have office hours tomorrow at 6PM). Didn't notice anything on BlackBoard either about this particular site. Any info on this will be very much appreciated.

I think this is my first thread topic outside of the FS forum, so be gentle.

Here's my current thesis, it's horrible, I know...
"The white middle-class Americans experienced many labor difficulties during the Great Depression, affecting their family?s status and ability to provide. "

Think this is good enough for such an essay? Or should I revise it? I would like to incorporate how WWI and the roaring twenties contributed to the great depression.

Care to explain the unknown topic? How are you going to know what to write about? And yes, you should get started and stop procrastinating!

Woohoo, I finished a page!

I'll give you a hint: the Fed, France, and the Gold Standard were major causes of the Great Depression.

What I would do:
1) Use quotes. start each paragraph with a statement of your own, insert quote from your source, then explain quote and/or tie it to your statement
2) Use the widest spaced font you can find that doesn't look too suspicious. I don't know what it is but I've heard it mentioned before.
3) just turn in 8 pages and opt for the lower grade you'll get since time is short.
4) maybe pad the margins a bit?

10 pages is alot, it won't fly off the keyboard unless you are well versed in the subject. Even then, it's still alot

Guess that depends on where you went to high school, and how much effort you put in. Obviously not much with the kind of procrastination it seems your prone to......

Good Luck w/ your essay. Try not to wait so long next time, you will be much happier.

As part of getting your Doctorate, you have to orally defend your dissertation.

you could always outline your topics that you will discuss in your essay and create sub headings with further analysis. make it an interesting essay and if you care about grades. review notes you have taken in class and incorporate the instructor's thought on this subject with further analysis. also remember it is good to have your own opinion but make sure your opinion is not too divergent from the instructors since he or she grades it. i hope this helps.

invidia i think u were joking right? if not. shame on you. Beg for an extension. Say that additional research you have found during your literature review compels you to take a more stronger argument on your topic and you need more time to revise and re-edit. but 75 pages isnt bad for a dissertation.

You dont get anywhere near oral defense unless you are pretty much done. Most oral defenses are a done deal.

Thanks for the points everyone, I have been implementing my class notes on WWI. We have not yet taken notes on the Great Depression, nor the main events leading up to it. I have also researched my topic in the library and found several books which will prove useful.

And, JACKHAMMER, you speak the truth. My high school is actually one of the better ones in California. I did not do as well as I wanted though. However, I am doing much better in college since I am doing my assignments a few days before they are due and putting effort in. Still, I procrastinate too much for my own good. I'll make eliminating procrastination my New Year's goal...

Ability to provide what? Kittens? Balloons? Food? Shelter? Security? alligators? Midgets? Sharks with frickin' lasers on their heads?

I have picked my topic: Rb Bose-Einstein condensation to solve decohorence arising from inhomogeneity. Now all I have to do is wait for the library and lab to open up at 8 am, so I can start writing up my thesis.

Oh, I meant 3pm tomorrow afternoon.

Why not cover the New Deal policies Roosevelt implemented to get out of the depression? FDIC, CCC, SEC, CWA, Social Security...you could write a 10-page essay on those programs alone.
