Of course.

Here's my current thesis, it's horrible, I know...
"The white middle-class Americans experienced many labor difficulties during the Great Depression, affecting their family?s status and ability to provide. "

Think this is good enough for such an essay? Or should I revise it? I would like to incorporate how WWI and the roaring twenties contributed to the great depression.

Ability to provide what? Kittens? Balloons? Food? Shelter? Security? alligators? Midgets? Sharks with frickin' lasers on their heads?

Yeah, I knew I should've explained what provide actually was... I'm going to completely change my thesis though after reading these comments. And Snagle, I was planning on sticking that info in somewhere. Since you say I can get 10 pages alone on that I'll make it more pronounced.

The essay follows MLA format, no border/font changing.

I'm not sure what the prompt is, but I wouldn't write a 10 page paper based on that thesis. It was called "The Great Depression" because everyone experienced labor difficulties. If you're going to write about how WWI and the roaring twenties led to the Great Depression, at least make your thesis relate to that in some way. No teacher wants to read a ten page paper with a thesis that isn't even really arguable, especially if the paper itself doesn't even relate to the thesis.

I guess I should at least give you some encouragement... the last time I wrote a ten page paper I wrote it starting at about 5am the night before it was due (including doing most of the research) and I got an A, so you should be fine

Topic is "Effects on white, middle-class Americans" (Great Depression). I'm going to assume summarizing WWI and the roaring twenties = bad idea?

And thanks for the optimism hiredgoons. Some of you guys should really get started on your assignments!

I once researched AND wrote a 10 page (single spaced) paper for my college history class. I did it in about 5 hours the night before it was due. I got an A and the professor said I wrote well

Actually he lists 4 topics that we must choose from, so creativity is out the window. I doubt if he cares about thinking outside the box either. I've handed in terrible essays yet I still got a B+ and up. Those were only 4 page essays though.

FilmCamera, nice job! I wish I could do that.

10 page paper? Is that honestly supposed to be impressirve or something? Most of the people on ATOT can write a 10 page paper in much less time than you have.

Who are you posting to?

If it's directed at me, I've already stated that many AT members can probably whip this up in no time. I'm just looking for some good tips, which many members have already provided me with.

I should be able to just rehash most of the information found at wikipedia and do well (he doesn't seem to grade hard on written work). My plan is to tackle it tonight and hopefully only have one or two pages to finish off tomorrow morning. Then I will look for any grammatical errors. Any tips on how to fill the pages up quickly? I think I'll first summarize WWI and the roaring twenties, then explain how they led up to the great depression, then describe the great depression itself and its effects on the middle-class Americans. Or should I just focus on the great depression and its effects on the middle-class citizens? (which is what the essay is suppose to be mainly about)

Also, anyone submit a paper to turnitin.com? I have no clue how to and my professor hasn't responded to my email (but he does have office hours tomorrow at 6PM). Didn't notice anything on BlackBoard either about this particular site. Any info on this will be very much appreciated.

I think this is my first thread topic outside of the FS forum, so be gentle.

Man, you're screwed if you think you can just rehash what's on wikipedia and get by. How are you going to cite sources? Surely you don't plan on citing wikipedia. An encyclopedia is not an acceptable source for a college paper. The wikipedia article lists references, but gives no indication of what information came from which source or what pages in the sources the information is from. So you're going to turn a paper in with no sources cited?

Since you're a freshman and you apparantly haven't written many papers, perhaps you should post the instructions/requirements for the assignments. One of the biggest mistakes I've seen people make is not fulfilling the requirements completely.

I worded that rather badly... the essay requires 5 secondary sources (which I have), along with additional reference sources. So I'll be using the secondary sources + wikipedia + several other sites/books to gather information to back up my statements.

Oh, I meant 3pm tomorrow afternoon.

Right, you're going to do your dissertation in 1 night, and turn it in 30min before your defense. I'm hoping my sarcasm meter is off due to the time of night.

OK... you understand that you can't put any information in the paper without citing the source, right? That's plagiarism. So if you're using Wikipedia as a source, you have to either cite it (in which case your professor should smack you for using wikipedia as a source for a college paper) or not cite it (in which case your professor should wonder why you have information in your paper that has no source cited).

Unless your college has very low academic standards, you're in for a rude awakening if you continue to use Wikipedia in your college career.

...

A works cited page and proper citations of quotes is not sufficient. If you take an idea from a work and use it in your paper, you must cite it. Even if it is not a direct quote. You're using wikipedia as a source, and you're not citing it (apparantly), and that is plagiarism.

I'm not trying to argue with you, I'm trying to help you. Plagiarism can get you kicked out of college. I KNOW someone who got kicked out of college for plagiarism.

Yep. An idea must be in at least three scholarly sources to be considered an idea for general use. Other than that, it must be cited. I have brought two kids in front of SJC for that very reason this semester alone.

The beauty of using wikipedia is that you can copy the entire thing, and then to cover your ass, you can edit the wiki entry to be something completely different.

But uh, yeah, I've got a 10 pg history term paper due tomorrow evening, a math assignment due tomorrow morning, and a rather large (so far it's about 20 pages) quantum assignment due.

I'm kinda screwed. Oh well.

I know you are trying to help, I apologize if I came off harsh. I'm using wikipedia to learn general facts about what actually happened in the great depression and what is included in the new deal. Then I will search for sites that give specific details on the subject, and use quotes (and cite them properly). Do I still need to cite wiki since I am not taking anything from it?
