"i have an acer 8x4x24 8mb buffer that i bought at staples for $80.00 about 2 mos ago. Quality is very poor at 8x burn. lots of skipping and static on audio cds, but ok if burning data cds. the only decent burn for audio is at 2x. and trust me when i say that i've tried every conceivable method to try and make it burn audio cleanly at 8x."

After the above testimonial on the acer cdr drive I wouldn't touch it with a ten foot pole.

FORGET THESE DEALS!!!

by and large, this is all JUNK components! The Tvs, monitors, vcrs are all CRAP !! Here at the hot deals forum, we regularly find much lower prices on MUCH HIGHER QUALITY stuff...

just compare:
19" compaq monitor for $150 (previously at mercata double deals)
4 head Panasonic vcr for $55

Lets leave Oritron, Brocksonic, Tronic, White-Westinghouse, etc.. to be snapped up by all the dumb people rushing in because they THINK these prices are hot deals...none are, and theyre only about 10% less than everyday prices...

SAVE YOUR TIME AND SLEEP IN FRIDAY!!

Excellent post John P.!

Just a note about Acer drives: I bought an Acer 36X CD-Rom at a computer show to save some bucks and have regretted it ever since. The ONLY way I can get it to work acceptably is to run CD-Spin to keep the disk spinning perpetually, due to terrible spin-up/spin-down cycles that produce blue screen errors every time a prog tries to access the drive.
Also, it's louder than a blender full of marbles. As for tech support, it is apparently easier to shave monkeys and glue phones to their hands than to actually employ cognizant humans.

Of course, this is a sample size of one, so it's up to you whether to generalize...

Lot's of luck on the Acer rebates also. I think they have a policy of paying the rebates only after you have begged and threatened for a considerable time. Maybe they just don't like me.

went to super(_LOL_)kmart last night. the apex that was there is gone. in fact, all dvd players were pulled off the shelves...front page center of thanksgiving ad has picture of apex dvd (600A tag--but not the face)player for $99 from $139(says quantities limited--40,000 storewide, NONE of em here in memphis)...what the apex(with same ad photo) was two weeks ago...store clerk found box with remote, cables, etc. of missing display model. i almost feel sorry for the person who must've bought it...
edit: found out why none were on the shelf last night and the deal with the box... somebody stole all the dvd players in the store.

I have owned 4 burners over the last three years:

Acer 2x2x6
Acer 4x2x24
Acer 8x4x32

and now I have a TDK 12x10x32. I really have only good things to say about Acer drives. I had great luck with all of those drives and the 8x4x32 w/8mb buf, which I sold a week ago, was a champ at multitasking during a burn. I believe I had rebates on all three drives and recieved them all. I did call Acer when I first got the 2x and they seemed to know what they were talking about in regards to IDE placement.

I also bought the 8x4x32 as a gradutation gift over the summer and paid $249. It sickens me to see this drive so dirt cheap.

Just went to the Best Buy in Deerfield, IL. They had 3 of the drives sitting on their shelves. I grabbed one and went up front to try and see how their pricematch policy would be for a 5 hour sale. The guy asked me where I got the drive - he insisted that they were not for sale yet and the were NOT on their shelves yet. I showed the guy where they were and he was pissed off - I thought he was going to try and grab the one I had in my hands. I talked to 3 people and none of them would confirm that I could go into Best Buy AFTER the sale and get the $109 pricematch, let alone the rebate. I guess I'll just go in Friday during the sale and get the price match - if the rebate doesn't qualify for purchases outside of the 5 hour sale, i'll try and return and rebuy. Even without the rebate, $109 for a 10x burner is damn good. Would it be wise to try and sell my 2x Memorex and my 50x reader??? I'm pretty sure 32x read is good enough for today's software - plus it will free up an IDE channel for me

MAGView uses the same logo as MAG -- Best Buy had both MAG branded and the MAGView branded monitors. I saw the MAGView 15" and 17" monitors, and they didn't look very bad at all -- I was impressed by the sharpness (considering I had expected crap-Packard Bell quality, they were excellent!). I think that 19" is probably a decent monitor for that price.

I also bought one of the Acer drives and will attempt to pricematch on Friday. If they say no, I'll return it. No harm done.

I dont know what time BB closes but if you live in Indy they have quite a few Acer drives in the aisle in the back on 38th street with what I presume is the sale camera next to it.

None on the shelves...we found them by accident and bought several

So the $99 DVD Player is K-Mart is definately the AD-600A (With mp3) and not the AD-500 (no mp3)?

The units look identical, except for the karoke inputs on the front.

I don't have the ad to see it myself. Does it say mode AD-600A?

Thanks.

Also Best Buy doesnt have the stuff on the shelf yet because in their ads they have a GUARANTEED minmum amount.... so they have to save them for tommorow.

According to Iomega's website the 12x10x32 has burnproof but the 12x4x32 in the ad does not.

My experience:

Acer 10x CD-RW: Quiet, burns audio and data cd's at full speed with no problems. It IS cloneCD compatible, I've used it. Audio sounded perfect and CloneCD worked perfect. I've owned mine for 7 months. For $80 what more could you ask !

Zip Iomega 12x4x32: Does have BurnProof (at least it was on the box at Best Buy in Bold Letters). For $150 you could try to pricematch at staples and get it for $110 like some are doing.

Pricematch at Staples through their website or what? Does Staples still have a 150% guarantee? Or do you mean buy it online and use the $40 coupon?

Staples also has a free USB camera from 7AM-10AM tomorrow, an IBM for $40 with $40 rebate.

In case someone can't make it to both Best Buy and Staples, which camera is better, the IBM or the Ezonics EZcam Plus?
