I have an Iowa quarter missing the silver on one side-is it worth anything?

Yes, it's worth anywhere from $200-$500 retail, which means you'd get about 30% less than that by selling it to a dealer.

The key guy for these is fredweinberg.com. You can check out similar errors here (look at the coins listed as clad layer missing). To get top dollar the coin would need to be authenticated and graded by PCGS.

PM if you need more info.

Thanks for the link Kranky

tboo: If you want to sell it quick, I'll give you $20 for it if one side is really copper colored. PM me if interested.

There is a huge difference between a coin that was machined incorrectly and purposely defaced coins. That is why an serious dealer will want the coin authenticated and graded before they purchase it.

Also, why do you find certain things valuable? Stamps, baseball cards, etc. Some people just like the stuff and are willing to pay more for it. You really don't neeed a $500 video card, but it sure is nice to brag about isn't it?

A 500 dollar video card is 500 dollars because it probably cost like 300-400 bucks to make. A stamp costs 500 dollars because it cost 3 cents to make. Whos getting better value.

It's still spending money frivilously. Maybe a video card wasn't the best example, but you're still spending a lot of money on something that you really don't need and just want to have to have. Also, production costs are not the only thing reflected in the cost of an item, as you should know. I'm sure if there were only 1,000 of a certain video card in the world and thats it, the price would increase exponentially, as is the case for some stamps, baseball cards, etc.

A $500 video card today will be worth $0 in 10 years.

A $500 stamp today will be worth >>$500 in 10 years.

Who gets the better deal?

Oh, I definitely get what your saying, but at least when spending on technology or something your paying mostly for production/distribution costs. I'd rather spend my money on actual stuff, just not something thats rare.

Wow, some of the coins on that site are so cool. I like the nickel-sized quarters.
