Really? I made it about 1/10th of the way through the first, and stopped due to boredom. They actually good? I HATED dragon age, thought it was a series of cliches stung together with shitty graphics, are they similar?

Maybe you should stop buying RPG's, they don't look to be your thing.

yeah, the series is great.

I played both back-to-back, and for a very short time ME2 turned me off because of the simplification of many aspects. That didn't last long though, and I really started to appreciate ME2 for what it is: a hell of a lot of fun.

I just got a new PC and I'm thinking about re-downloading both to play again.

I found ME1 almost impossible to play after playing ME2. I prefer the story, but the gameplay itself is a lot worse IMO. Shooting mechanics are pretty bad. The inventory system is poor and despite the huge number of items, they're really all the same thing but recolored and with different stats.

ME1 is more of an RPG, ME2 is more of a shooter. Both good games but it was hard to go back after the excellent ME2 combat system.

ME1 is great. You just need to get past the Citadel, and then you will be hooked.

I really don't know why they structured the game the way they did. You have a relatively brief mission in the beginning, then you spend what feels like HOURS on the Citadel running around, talking to people, and racking up a gigantic list of sidequests.

Bioware did the same thing with KOTOR. Fun game, marred by the first world of Taris, way too many side quests there.

If you liked ME series, you might also like EVE online. I tried EVE two days ago and fell in love with it. Though it's a very difficult and time comsuming game, definitely not for everyone's tastes. Btw, ME3 should be great with ME1-ME2 save game. Don't lose your save games if you're playing ME1,2!

EVE Online really has nothing in common with the Mass Effect series short of being set in space. It's an MMORPG, which means it can't have the same immersive story you get from a single player RPG.

lol, I would be really interested to know what your top 5 favorite games of all time are.

I prefer ME1 over ME2. ME2 was way too human-centric (and it looks like the 3rd is going to be even more so), and they made Adepts much less cool in the 2nd (by basically giving everyone some kind of supernatural power). The very last fight in the 2nd game was also incredibly cheesy to me (the first was too, but no where near as bad). I also prefer the story of the first game over the 2nd.

That being said, both are still very good games. The cinematic dialogue works very well for the ME setting (unlike Dragon Age 2).

ME1 was amazing, played it nearly start to finish. ME2 on the other hand, has a lot of familiar things I liked about ME1, but enough different in a negative direction that I keep dropping the game and haven't beaten it to this day.

What's wrong with being human-centric?

Nothing necessarily, but the first game was all about humanity fighting for its place in the galactic hierarchy, and the threat to all galactic life. There was a great sense of exploration and wonder seeing new species and planets. It gave you that feeling of how immense the universe is and all.

Fast forward to the sequel. Humans are chock full on just about every planet. The main quest is overrun with human characters, as is the citadel. The threat to all galactic life transforms into a human mystery (and now the 3rd looks like its all about defending Earth, not the galaxy...).

I have no problem with a more human-centric game... but the first game really painted a nice setting to tell a story in. I just like that it was about more than humanity.

The sense of wonder probably would have been gone regardless of the human centricism. Mass Effect was the first game in a trilogy, and had to establish the setting and draw in the gamer's interest to the setting. In the second game the setting is already established and what matters is the problem at hand.

And the third will be about defending the galaxy. Demos have been shown taking place on the salarian homeworld Sur'Kesh, and the turian homeworld Palaven has been confirmed as a visitable location.

I think what really got me into these games was the story, I really can't differentiate this game with other games in the genre based on gamplay but for some reason the Mass Effect games really caught my interest.

Same thing happened to me with Bioshock.

I'm about to restart my adventure. I decided to up some of the skill levels to hard and turn off aim assist, medium is way too easy.

I started it to make sure it was good to go and to my surprise I couldn't find 1680x1050. I had to go online to figure out that config program needs to be run manually from the ME folder.

What the frick, windows 7? iirc XP did that automatically.

Something must be wrong with your Mass Effect installation. I use 1680x1050, booted up the game last night and was able to select it through the in-game options menu. Works great.

Weill - it's been a while now, so I don't remember exactly how it went down.

But I do remember trying everything to get a higher res and not being able to figure it out. It was limited to 1280x something.

I knew that my previous playthrough in XP had been at 1680x1050, so I checked online and sure enough, it seemed some others had the same issue. As instructed I went to the ME folder in Steam and ran the ME config program, and there it let me check 1680x1050.

The config box had not appeared when I installed ME in Win7; the game started automatically.

This isn't the only game where the config box doesn't come up. To run Call of Juarez in DX 10, for example, I have to insert the disk every time to get that option.

Live and learn.

I just started ME1 yesterday for the first time ever, and I had to run that config program before I had anything higher than 1280 x whatever, as well. Once I ran that program once, then in-game I had all kinds of options that weren't there previous to running the config program.

I brought ME1 and 2 on a steam sale a while back, I still haven't really gotten into them yet. I'm at the point in ME1 where you have to try to prove some guy is a traitor to the council.

I'm not really enjoying the combat system in ME1; the weapon behaviors seem really off

Mass Effect 1 and 2 were both amazing games. Even though I was literally falling asleep during the first 3 hours of ME1, once the story picked up, I couldn't stop playing and found myself doing every mission and visiting all the planets. I enjoyed ME2 immensely for the improved game play and continuity, but I feel ME1 had the better story. Nothing in ME2 really compares to the epic 2-3 final hours of ME1.

I recently finished Dragon Age 2, and I pray that Bioware (or EA) doesn't pull a fast one on us with ME3.

I loved ME1, I thought there was no way ME2 could come close so I was skeptical when I fired it up. I LOVED ME2. Both awesome games. Cant wait for 3.
