The James Patterson books I've read go by fast, short chapters (although there are a lot of them), switch scenes back and forth a lot, generally like a movie script. You could make it toilet reading or something.

What did you do for tests and/or papers over assigned reading in high school and college English classes, use cliff notes and just enough BS?

I have never read a Cliff Notes. I did probably do some b.s.'n though. Believe it or not, I didn't cheat though (have other people do my papers).

I don't recall being assigned an entire book to read in college--yes, in high school but I wasn't much over a high C to low B (grades) student.

Engineering!!!!!

No, in Engineering you still read books, they're just textbooks instead and you're supposed to memorize them.

My friend has ADD and his solution is get books on tape. When I told him I might have a little of ADD as well, he suggested me to try, and I was enjoying the three or four audio books that I got. Soon non-friction audio books get into my head a lot faster that way than reading for some reason.

You were never assigned an entire book in college? What the hell did you major in?

If you're a writer, and you have never read a book cover to cover, you havn't read enough and are a bad writer. I really see no way you could be a talented writer.

I never was able to get myself to read a book, for leisure. Last book I read was Macbeth for high school, and I read Of Mice and Men. Those are the only two books that I fully read. Other books I read for school, I used Cliff Notes. I tried reading novels on my own, but I ended up only reading the first chapter then quit.

I can't seem to make it past page three or four.

Come to think of it though I did get deep into a couple of Hardy Boys books a couple of times.

Your screenplays are bad. I can tell you that without reading them. Not to be mean, but it is fact that you cannot be a good writer without a strong command of language, a talent which must be developed through reading.

You say you write screenplays for a living? I'm sorry, but I seriously doubt that to be true.

thats your problem, not the book's. learn to read faster. of course, the only way to do that is to read more. so its all circular. seriously, though. ive been reading books since kindergarten, and i can blow through a good novel in an afternoon.

Our educational system is a joke. They keep downgrading it to match the intellect of the people who flunk out of it.

Look, I really don't think that you would be able to write a good screenplay without having read good books. The fact that your satire above implies that you equate spelling with writing is case in point. That being said, you don't neccessarily need a "good screenplay" to get something shot. What kind of screenplays do you write?

I would heartily reccommend reading books, it would significantly (over time) improve your own writing. Try reading short stories first, if attention span is the issue. Stephen King has some collections with very short stories, which are engaging. Some of my first books (after the Hardy Boys) were by him. From there, you can expand into Sci-Fi, or reading plays. From there, you can tackle real novels. To think that they are not related is like thinking that a Chef can make a great meal, and not enjoy eating. Never trust a skinny Chef.
