I was tired of minute rice and wanted something different. I saw a 2kg bag of parboiled rice for $3 CDN at the grocery store and decided to try it out.

Using a 2:1 ratio and adding some veggies and seasonings, I was surprised at how good the rice tasted compared to minute rice. It was also quite fluffy.

I also use it to make fried rice.

I also like the nutrition level as well:
Parboiled rice carries 80% of the nutrients of brown rice.

Note: I do realize this is the same thing as Uncle Ben's Converted Rice. This is just the first time I used parboiled rice.

:awe:

Uncle Ben's Perverted Rice.

Can't you just learn how to cook real rice?

It tastes much better, is cheaper and really simple to cook.

Rice is a pain to cook, imo. I want to get one of those automated steamers from japan.

This is one of those culture things. Parboiled rice is by far the most popular rice in my country.

Good Lord. Thought I'd seen it all.

Try brown rice some time, if you can somehow manage to wait the 40-45 minute cooking time. All rice is pretty nutritionally vapid. At least brown rice has fiber.

What could be easier than putting some rice, some water, maybe a little salt and some butter in a pot and simmering it until all the water is absorbed or evaporates?

If that's a pain, you should probably stick to having pizzas delivered.

What could be easier? That is a massive failure of imagination, son. Try this:

"Carson, cook me some fucking rice!"

See? That was a shitload easier.

Well, it's better than Minute Rice, that's for sure. Still pretty nasty though. Try Jasmine or Basmati for much better rice.

OMG! Yet another rice turned rice cooker thread!

Just order a Zojirushi or Tatung rice cooker off Newegg or Amazon!

If you eat rice as a staple, I could see having a rice cooker. Otherwise, only hardware geeks would think you need to bust out a special device a few times a month to cook maybe the single simplest-to-cook food on the planet.

I never understood the difficulty of cooking rice. 1 cup of rice, 2 cups of water and a little salt and butter to taste. Why do people spend so much on rice cookers? Do people really suck that much at cooking?

Unless you have had rice from a rice cooker, you don't know the difference.
Sounds strange, but it's true.

Ask anyone who has.

I have, and I guess I disagree. Granted I've never had rice from one of those $300 japanese ones, but it tasted like....rice. Be sure to wash your rice until the water turns clear, it removes the starch and thus gumminess that can develop. But a pot with a lid works fine for me.

I recently switched to brown rice. Takes a about twice as long to cook but it is actually quite good.

Minute rice is shit... so is uncle bens.

Bullshit.

This is all you need to make perfect rice.

$15 rice cooker. put in rice > put in water > press cook > walk away

This. Not hard to cook rice.

The container even has water levels according to the amount of cups of rice you put in. Dump rice + water, close lid, and start.

Also, a tip - waiting about 10 minutes after the rice is done ensures the bottom doesn't stick with rice and can be scooped with the bottom of the pot coming off cleanly.

I recently ate at an Iranian restaurant. One of the interesting things on the menu was they served the rice that had stuck to the bottom of the rice cooker and had dried then they put a lentil sauce on top. It wasn't my favourite, but it was interesting.

"Scorched rice" or whatever you want to call it, is used commonly in many cultures...go to a Korean place in LA and they'll scrape it loose from the vessel and poor in hot water or tea. Some Chinese places might cook rice in earthenware pots and mix in sausage or pork belly to the "guoba".

Now I need to find a Middle Eastern restaurant to try what you mentioned...considering how often I eat at those types of places (they're everywhere in Detroit), I'm surprised I haven't run across it yet.

If you want to have an even more complete meal at minimal effort, there are cookers with steamer trays for vegetables or one can down right put extra ingredients on top of the rice (if a rice cooker lacks a tray for steaming).

Also, one is able to place in precooked sausages (I use the Chinese sausages) as well, it is pretty much an encompassing meal right there.

May need to adjust water a bit higher (for me when I do this).
