How's about starting with:

1) Your age (indicates insurance rates)
2) Whether you're willing to pay a lot for repairs
3) Do you want a sporty car or a massive truck to haul stuff?

since you have not specified any type of preference at all, i'll just shoot and say what I would buy with 4,000 (I am presuming USD)

I'd probably get a great condition 92 or so Nissan 240SX.

Can we have more info? Answer these:

Sporty/luxury/regular?
Car/truck/van?
Newer with less features or older with more features?
Is reliability important?
Is safety important?
Is fuel economy important?
Can you afford monthly payments in addition to the 4k?
Any features you must absolutely have (such as air conditioning or CD)?

Well then Fantasy Land; Population: You.

Firstly any "sporty" car, let alone a real performer, for a 16 year old will cost you more than you could dream in insurance. Secondly any sports car for $4k is going to bend you over and repeatedly feed it to you where the sun don't shine in repairs.

save up another $2000 and get a 94-95 Acura Integra LS (extremely dependable, very good used car).... or a civic hatch would do good

check out the resale values at www.cars.com

Get a 1990 CRX (dx or si)...drop in a b16a1 and you've got a 14 second car.

Then get either a real Mugen body kit, or you can go the el cheapo route and get a Wings West RS kit.

Then you have a nice sports car that's quick.

I had 5k saved when I bought my first car and just got a mid 90's corolla. Reliability is the most important thing to look for in a first car, well in my opinion anyway.

like i said get the old integra.... i also like the 300Z but it will probably need a few repairs... esp the turbo version and dont even talk about the insurance on thosebabies..

the integra is the best handling ff car in the world
it is fairly quick (not fast).. 14.7s typeR, about 15.5s for GSR and about 16.2s for the other versions

the only ones you can prob afford is the RS, LS, or SE/GS versions, definately not the VTEC GSR

the RS is decent but lacks 4disc brakes, moonroof and some other amenities.

i would try to look for an old 94 LS...

if u need more help.. goto the integra forums at www.superhonda.org or www.purehonda.org

You're 16 and you want a "sports car", eh? How about a '93-94 Subaru SVX? AWD and a relatively high curb weight might help keep you a little safer when you get in wreck after wreck.

just go and see what you can get at the used dealers near you and pick between them, 4k won't get you a good sports car

What's wrong with a b16a1 CRX?!?!

It should cost him a grand for the car, around 2 grand for the motor and whatever work is involved, and another grand for a Wings West RS (urathane kit) and he'll be smoking Integras and he'll look "JDM". What more could he want?

If anyone calls it rice, give me reasons, or else prepare to put on your flame retardent suit. :|

How about a car that isn't a POS? A $1000 car? Come on!

I'd go with a used pick up truck, maybe nissan or toyota...Since your young it will probally come in handy with all the moving you'll be doing in the next couple of years...

By the way, the Mazda protege gets real high marks for reliability so a used protege might not be a bad choice either.

AHHA, not if he is primary driver. You must be insured under your parents. No insurance company in the world would give insurance to a 16 year old on a v8 mustang for $1k year if he is the sole owner and driver of the car.

The G20 is badged as an Infiniti. You can get an old one pretty cheap, but they are definitely not too sporty. They are probably pretty reliable since they share a lot of parts with the Sentra.

we were comparing insurance rates in my econ class (expensive private school). Mine was the cheapest at $91 a month. I am the SECONDARY driver on my car (95 Oldsmobile Cutlass SL 3.1 - red coupe). My mom does not have a car listed on that insurance. A lot of other people's were $1200-1500 every 6 months, with their primary drivership on their 30K SUV or sports car.
