That's not true at all. Most academics LOVE having someone to argue against. Not that they don't have their own pet theories, but if you can hold your own with an alternate viewpoint, that's good.
They do tend to get a little pissy when you try to argue against them without any real evidence to back you up, though.

Don't forget, that by being White (always capitalize it!), you're part of the only ethnic group in America that isn't recognized as being American! I was surprised that when I looked at Amazon's page for this book, it doesn't suggest, Black Like Me, the obvious source of the titular allusion. That book would provide the OP everything she needs to write the paper, and maybe give you some historical context. Don't worry, it's a easy read.
