You have no idea what History is being discussed.
Nor do you.
MotionMan
You have no idea what History is being discussed.
Most people, and especially most professors just want an echo chamber to feed their own opinions back to them.
You'll never have to worry about jumping so high that you'll impale yourself on a fence.
You can tan very easily
It's also a bit easier to pick out potential skin conditions.
You don't have to worry about your girlfriend telling you your penis is too big.
There's probably some others I'm forgetting.
That's not true at all. Most academics LOVE having someone to argue against. Not that they don't have their own pet theories, but if you can hold your own with an alternate viewpoint, that's good.
They do tend to get a little pissy when you try to argue against them without any real evidence to back you up, though.
Thornton Melon: [incensed] All right. I'll say it. 'Cause Truman was too much of a *pussy wimp* to let MacArthur go in there
[shouts]
Thornton Melon: and blow out those Commie bastards!
Professor Terguson: Good answer. Good answer. I like the way you think. I'm gonna be watching you.
There is no white privilege anymore. Any privilege is left over from when it actually existed. I.E., you inherit the left over privilege.
This inheritance takes place by interacting with those who were still alive when white privilege existed or in the form of surplus physical commodity that was obtained during privileged times.
you making me sound white with lower standards. There is no white privilege anymore. Any privilege is left over from when it actually existed. I.E., you inherit the left over privilege.
This inheritance takes place by interacting with those who were still alive when white privilege existed or in the form of surplus physical commodity that was obtained during privileged times.
Wait. So are we hanging out this weekend so you can see how awesome it is for me to be white or not?
Let me know soon. Leaving for the Sierras at 8:30am tomorrow. I'll pick you up if you're in.
Depends. Are you going to give me an anal probing?
Your teacher is trying to "make a difference" by influencing students.

A classic example is slavery, which is repeatedly drummed into our heads in the schools and in the media as something unique done by white people to black people in the United States.
The tragic fact is that, for thousands of years of recorded history, people of every race and color have been both slaves and enslavers.
The Europeans enslaved on the Barbary Coast of North Africa alone were far more numerous than all the Africans brought to the United States and to the 13 colonies from which it was formed.
What was unique about Western civilization was that it was the first civilization to turn against slavery, and that it stamped out slavery not only in its own societies but in other societies around the world during the era of Western imperialism.
That process took well over a century, because non-Western societies resisted. White people, as well as black people, were still being bought and sold as slaves, decades after the Emancipation Proclamation freed blacks in the United States.
Those who want to "give back" should give back the truth. It is a debt that is long overdue.

No trolling intended. When I signed up for Anandtech Forums I realized I was a manlet.
Don't forget, that by being White (always capitalize it!), you're part of the only ethnic group in America that isn't recognized as being American! Everyone else is Hispanic-American, African-American, Asian-American, Native American, etc.....until you get to us lighter-skinned folk, who are either White, or Caucasian!
I need to pass this class to graduate D:
Our assignment is to regurgitate the the argument that "White Like Me: Reflections on Race From a Privileged Son" makes. The prompt specifically says, "Do not stray off point to critique his argument in the paper"
propagating "white guilt".
no respect for anyone but themselves, and it shows.Really? Or is it merely to reflect on recent Wrongs whose effects linger to this day?
Why? Arguing the opposite is like saying the Earth is flat.
I was surprised that when I looked at Amazon's page for this book, it doesn't suggest, Black Like Me, the obvious source of the titular allusion. That book would provide the OP everything she needs to write the paper, and maybe give you some historical context. Don't worry, it's a easy read.
