I have WD Raptor 160GB sata drive.. Win7 reports error, drive tests do not

Hi guys,

I have the following build

AthlonX2 5000
2GB ram 667
8800GT
2x1TB Sata drives (data)
1x160GB WD raptor drive (OS)
Win7 Enterprise

Somedays, I won't get any errors, sometimes, I'll get a Win7 detected hard drive problem pop up every 5 minutes.

I have an "ultimate boot" cd, and I've run various drive tests, none reported any problem.

However, I hear clicking coming from the drive every once in a while, like when it tries to spin up. And I'll get errors. I also have Crysis installed to that drive, and sometimes when I'm playing the game will lock up and when I close it, I'll see the win7 drive error popup. Or when I'm downloading a new map, sometimes I will get a drive write error and the game will lock up. I also seem to hear the drive noises when these errors happen.

The drive is under warranty, but I'd hate to have to do a reinstall of my os on a new drive if that's not the problem. Any ideas? I'm going to run another few extended drive tests tonight.

Scan the HD with a bootable MHDD CD.

One of my friends had that Dell HD as well and his broke in a year. I've heard of a lot of problems with that drive, so I wouldn't be surprised if you will need to RMA it.

Just replaced one of these drive for a client. His drive showed signs of failing a month prior but after running the WD Diagnostic tool it showed no errors and test good. Good thing I had his drive imaged to another internal drive. If I were you I'd definitely start backing up all my data just in case it fails on you.

This is entirely possible; as the heads can be failing and may not be reading sectors as bad, just slowly.

If sectors are being reported as bad, then the software you are using likely has no idea.


MHDD is a great freeware to try!


MHDD, HDD Scan, and Victoria are the best freeware available for HDD diagnostics, otherwise you need some fancy equipment to really do it.
