UPDATE: Got the call the day after the interview (as I was getting ready to board the plane back to school). Got the job! Completely out of the blue but I guess I did better than I thought. Can't even tell you guys how happy I am.

How did you screw it up?

Three back-to-back thirty minute rounds. First round was a stress test...he fired technical questions at me over and over again. Basically asked me about general economic trends, which I answered a push toward equities in the US, and increasing inflation in emerging markets. He then focused in on emerging markets, asking me a general question about that. Then focused in even further, etc., until I had no idea what he was even asking. He kept doing this for every topic we talked about. Questions would get to the point of being so complex it was ridiculous.

The second round went better, was mainly fit with little technical questions. I screwed up a couple of them, and didn't really feel a connection with the interviewer.

Last round went great...2-on-1 interview all about fit, with one technical question (how would I invest $1 million for 1 year) which I nailed. Really connected with the two interviewers, but not enough to make up for the other shitty two interviews.

I'll likely find out tomorrow, don't have my fingers crossed.

So what is the correct answer on how to invest $1 million for 1 year? I can only spare $100 but I'd like to know.

Don't worry too hard about it, interviewers will occasionally ask questions that we know you won't get because sometimes we just want to hear you say you don't know. How you deal with not knowing something can say a lot about you.

Correct answer is I would invest in XYZ, and justify it with why.

For example, you can answer "I would put it in muni bonds" you would say "because I'm a risk averse pussy that makes too much money." On the flip side you could say "I would invest it in out of the money call options in a high beta tech co because I'm a degenerate gambler."

Was this for a summer analyst position? What type of position was this for?

You might be surprised and just get the offer especially if your third interviewer has any pull/is the hiring manager.

good luck

At my company we pull the same tricks, except there are 5 or more of us ganging up on the poor bastard being interviewed. We intentionally ask them questions that there is no possible way of them knowing just to see how they react to the pressure.

One of the software guys managed to make some poor woman cry after she couldn't answer 6 questions in a row.

Needless to say, that's not what we are looking for in our employees.

This, I wouldn't be too discouraged about not being able to answer the extremely technical questions. Maybe you didn't bomb, they might not have even expected you to be able to answer some of the questions.

You are lucky she didn't come back with a gun and shot your balls off.

Thanks. It is for a summer analyst position for Sales & Trading. Company is a very large, prominent bank that has seen a lot of exposure to the media over the past few years.

I should find out today. We'll see what happens...

being a bankster is serious business. You need to know how to shrewdly fuck everyone in sight while whispering sweet nothings in their ear. Thats what they wanted to hear man, those sweet nothings.
