It depends on your personal taste. Personally I like my coffee strong enough to kill a bull elephant, so I usually mix it ~2 heaping tbsp for a cup. Using these aren't the most efficient method of making coffee (uses more grounds) but it gives far better results than an auto-drip, and is easier to travel with than a Bodum press.

Also, get an electric kettle. The cheapest plastic ones are around $10 at my local grocery store, or $11 on amazon. http://www.amazon.com/b?ie=UTF8&node=289753 Some say that using a specific kettle helps for pour over coffee. I'm looking at getting the $90 programmable one, because I'm also into tea, and being able to control the temperature is really nice for different teas

It's better to leave the kettle off a minute or so after boil. Coffee should be brewed at around 200 f.

^ This. A cheap, metal blade grinder (Black & Decker, Mr. Coffee, etc.) can be picked up at a local store for ~$15. A better option would be a Burr Mill grinder which can be found online starting around $25-30 @ Amazon. Burr Mills create less friction (aka less heat) and don't scorch the oils in the beans as they're ground.

10cc per cup would be a good starting point. By cup, I mean whatever coffee makers are, not a cup you drink from. I think they use a 6oz measure per cup.

I've been making coffee that way for years now.

Krups electric kettle, Pfaltzgraf porcelain cone holder, Melita #4 paper filters, pint mug.

Boil water, put filter in cone, spoon in coffee, place cone over mug, pour in water, wait a couple of minutes.

Cleanup is easier than with a drip coffeemaker, just toss the filter in the trash and rinse the cone.

Add ground coffee to taste, pour the water slowly don't dump it all in at once. For Starbucks Coffee Verona I use 5 gently rounded teaspoons for 16 oz of water.

It's definitely a step down from the good ones, but it's still better than a blade grinder.

Do you have access to a local coffee roaster? Fresh roasted coffee is the next level of goodness, after grinding your own beans

I'm sooo fucking glad I don't like coffee. I mean, on a cold ass day I don't mind sipping a good espresso at a cafe/restaurant, but the whole daily grind of "WAAAAAH I CANT WAKE UP/WANK OFF WITHOUT MY COFFEE" is just stupid.

I don't doubt you, but I think they're just being whiners. Long term habits of any kind are hard to break. If you're used to having a cup of coffee(or anything routinely) at work in the morning, it throws your day off balance to have the routine disrupted. Stopping at a convenience store on the way in isn't a major ordeal, so I'd do the same. If it were more involved than that, I'd just go without, and it wouldn't be a big deal. Of course, I'm also always prepared. I'd have a stash of instant, and/or tea bags in my desk, and if I were riding as passenger, I wouldn't ask someone else to stop. I'd use my backup stuff.

I'll be honest, If I do drink coffee - I drink it with a bit of creamer and that's it. I see other people shove so much shit in there it's ridiculous... yet doesn't taste any better.

And no - I have one of the most stressful jobs and If I haven't fallen victim to daily coffee yet, I never will

Why not just use a regular coffee maker?

Someone bought me a Keurig machine for christmas one year. It works and all, but it's basically what's at the top of this thread. It's just all put into a machine with a water reservoir and heating mechanism. I would prefer the electric kettle and cup-filter gizmo, I think. As long as the coffee is strong enough.

That's the problem with the Keurig. You cannot make strong coffee unless you use their pricey pre-packaged stuff...the little 'use your own grounds' cups just don't work. Either I pack them tight, and the water doesn't penetrate them, or I don't pack them, and the water runs through without taking in much coffee-ness. I tried like eight times in a row one day, varying how I did it. Threw out every cup.

But anyway, my main point: Cheap coffeemaker. Put the amount of grounds and water you want in it. Done. As long as you don't just want one 6oz cup or something, it works fine in varying quantities.
