I just crashed my friend's car... what happens now?

We were driving back from a trip, both of us very tired, and we had decided to alternate driving, me starting first. Well turns out I wasn't as capable of staying alert and awake as I thought I was, and I fell asleep at the wheel. Needless to say, the car ended up flying off the side of the highway into the woods hitting a few trees completely totaling the car. I know I made a stupid mistake, but now I know better never to DWT (drive while tired). What I want to know now is, since I was driving my friend's car, how will this work with the insurance company? Will my insurance or his insurance cover it, or neither?

Depends on the insurance company and how his coverage is set up. Normally insurnace covers the car regardless of driver, but sometimes you can end up with a gimp version of insurance that just covers the primary driver of the vehicle.

Crap, I think he has basic, almost bare minimum coverage... he says he uses Geico. So what happens if his insurance only covers him (the primary driver)?

Also one of the reasons that I've never let anyone else drive my vehicle. I'm just too scared of the liability involved if someone else crashes the vehicle.

How so? At least he admitted he made a mistake and isn't trying to find a way to scam the insurance company.

This is the point where I have to rant a bit, so forgive me.

You should know your insrance policy. Inside goddamned out. And he should know his. Same way. Why? because of instances like this. So, whereas you just went down and said "Hey! I need cheap insurance so I can drive!" you should have sat down and ran ALL these "What if's" by your agent then hammer out a policy that fits YOU. If you and your friend had done this then there wouldnt be the worry and confusion would there?
/end rant

He needs to call his agent, and if his insurance doesnt cover it then you need to call yours and if your agent doesnt cover it you better be REAL good at kissin ass.

Depends if you were even covered. With my insurance anybody 25 and above is automatically, but I believe I have to declare those who are 24 and younger.

Because he doesnt know his policy thats why. I damned well know my policy. I couldnt list the exact amounts for everything right off, but i DAMNED well know who can and cant drive my car!
In my case my policy covers the car. Period. I could loan it to a non licensed illegal immigrant and he could wrap it around a tree and I'll still get a check.

Same with me...it makes sense because your insurance company should encourage you to use a designated driver.

Call to insurance rep:

Him: Hi, I was wondering if let's say someone else was driving my car and got into an accident, would I be covered?

I.R: ummm, it seems that you have basic liability so i'm afraid not.

Him: Oh, that's too bad. BTW I got into a car accident today and need to file a claim.

Why do you care what HIS policy says? YOU wrecked the car. Call YOUR insurance and see if they cover it. He shouldn't have to deal with this at all if you possibly can.

The insurance company will not cover a car that isn't on his policy... You have to call your friend up, even though he doesn't want to talk to you. Tell him to call his insurance company and hopefully they will cover it.

He's not asking about his policy.
