I just don't get why people use RC5 and SETI@Home

Poof, what's your point? As I said, the F@H project is much less precise. IBM decided that they want as accurate a simulation as possible. While it takes more time, the results are more likely to stand up to experimental evaluation.

If we find another civilization with technology, odds are they will have had technology much longer than we have and they would have the ability to help us with much of our science. This would make most of our other efforts obsolete.

Oppsie...looks like I got flamed

Anyway, no matter what you guys say about RC5 (pioneers, stable clients, team spirit etc etc) it won't change the fact that it IS useless. Why would anybody want to crack 64bit encryption by brute force? You know that there are a finite number of keys and if you try all of them, you will crack the encryption sooner or later.
Plus, anyone who is half serious about doing anything important over the web uses 128bit encryption so cracking 64 bit is pretty useless.

Also, I didnt know about the AIDS fighting project but it sounds like a very good idea too. MUCH better than RC5

And finally, even if we DO find a radio signal from ET, what will that do for us? It will probably take us many, many, many years to send a signal back, if we choose to do so and we will never really be able to go to that planet with our current technology.

One last thing, what makes you think those aliens will be friendly and give us their technology? Does the US give their advanced technology to some small, weak, pityful third world country?
Maybe they'll just kill us and take whatever's left of our small resources. Who knows...

/me thinks pyro should give it a rest.

You've already made your point and your argument. Even if it was a bit insulting.

Firstly as a result of contact ,we may find or be told better ways of contacting them.
2.This project is for the LONG run ,ie if we contact ET soon ,then thats something we could build on over Centuries ,when eventually we could travel there.Your not looking at the big picture.

>>>>One last thing, what makes you think those aliens will be friendly and give us their technology? Does the US give their advanced technology to some small, weak, pityful third world country?<<<<

Obviously they wouldn't give away there most dangerous technology ,but there 'bread crumbs' could be our feast .Also you can't say that the 3rd world countries haven't had ANY US technology ,can you?

>>>>Maybe they'll just kill us and take whatever's left of our small resources. Who knows...
<<<<<

Just as well Colombus didn't think like that .
Sometimes exploration is dangerous ,I doubt they would pillage our planet ,they could of already done that

What resources? Why would someone come all this way to take resources that can be found in asteroids and comets without the gravitational problems you would have while taking them from earth?

Why, then do OGR of course.

It's well-established with d.net, it's got a great TA team, it is very useful, and there's lots of great stats. Go TA!

i'm gonna get a bit off subject, but think about how small the chances of finding ET are.

suppose that there IS intelligent life elsewhere. but what if that life did not discover radio waves yet? I mean a race could be as advanced as we were 60 years ago and STILL not have powerful enough transmitters so that we can catch their signals. I mean they could have great societies, long history and many achievents but we still would classify them as unintelligent because they lack powerful transmitters.
What's more is that even if they are as advanced as us or a little bit more so, we might not catch them becauxse of earthly interference.
And if a race was more advanced, would it really use an old technology like radio? chances are that it/they wont.

just something to think about...

If you don't look ,then you'll never find it.

All technologies have basic begginings ,as time passes better clients will (hopefully) be released ,as long as the interest (& resources) remains.

Ref intereferance ,if they transmit once ,they'll transmit again.

So there

But what if they did ?. It just takes time. Its like playing lotto, you cant win it if your not in it.

Pyro,

This is not meant to be a flame.

Why don't you spend some more time at the SETI@Home site and some of the links there and learn some more things before putting the project down.
I would not put down Folding@Home without learning about it first.
I would doubt that you have spent a lot of time learning about SETI projects because your posts make it appear to me that you have not.

If you know why people climb mountains and drag race, you will understand why I do RC5 in addition to SETI.

For broadcasting? For RADAR? Why not?

Oooo... sensitive... There was no point... I just thought it was an interesting coincidence that you mentioned Blue Gene after I had just seen it also mentioned on the folding list yesterday... I'm not folding for TA. I'm CRACKING for TA.

Check my sig buddy...

Rubbish. It is not useless if it raises my endorphin levels and makes me live longer and happier because competing with the DPC is, to quote the Beach Boys, Fun, Fun, Fun.

You sound like Scrooge in a Distributed-Computing Carol, saying Bah Humbug as you kick the blocks out of Tiny Tim's frail hands. Maybe you need a visit from the ghosts of rc5 Past, rc5 present and rc5 Future.

people climb mountains and drag race cuz its fun and they get to kill time. I dont really see how RC5 can be fun, especially since you are not really doing anything, but letting your comp do all the work.

I did not really diss SETI, but all I am saying is that project like it should not be more important than fighting AIDS or learning to fold proteins, which will offer many more benefits.

I agree with you on that point . It shouldn't be more important than doing those other things. The fact of the matter is that S@H has tons more cpu time than it can actually use. Single dish observatories use clients that can monitor their data in real time with a dual P3 system. Obviously S@H has a lot more data to analyze, but not enough for 2 million people. Heck, 1000 people with good systems could check their data as fast as it comes in. 2000 can double check the data as fast as it comes in. I also agree with you regarding RC5, but most everyone else here learned long ago not to start topics like this, because they are useless. TA has teams in almost every dc project there is. Join the TA team that's involved with your project, and be happy with the rest that are involved in it with you. These guys do their own thing, and always will .

Personally, I do OGR. While I agree that learning about protein folding and testing AIDS drugs are important, I'm a physical scientist. The prot. folding is going to be taken care of by IBM. And I don't have AIDS. While it may be selfish of me, I prefer doing projects that have benefits in my own field. OGR and GF are really the only two that fit that description, and I tired of Dcypher a while back, so I'm doing OGR.

Well, I normally don't post in these kind of threads, but you have managed to piss me off. :|

Do some research on the projects before you post next time. You appear to me to be ignorant in the following areas:

  • Distributed computing and the distributed computing model
  • The Drake Equation and why we search
  • Cryptography
  • Statistical Addiction
  • Manners

Some of us do these projects because, like dennilfloss said, we like to do them. Go TA!!

Pyro:

Let me tell you why this DPC member does RC5:

Its very simple, I just like the friendly competition between the teams and the friendship with my fellow DPC members.

As one of the members who has been with the DPC from the start, i just started to run the client on my computer because it sounded like fun, not because there was some greater goal i wanted to achieve, or help accomplish. Just taking part was, and still is, a daily source of fun.

  1. I am not discussing the Distributed Computing model

The drake equation can be totally wrong

    What about cryptography

Stasitical Addiction? That just might be the answer I was looking for, although I still dotn get how ppl can get a 'high' from stats

what about manners? I havent insulted or cursed/swore at anybody. Its a discussion, nothing more. If you odnt wanna talk about it...then...

Pyro,

It's my life to do with as I please.

What is it about that statement that you don't understand?
