I just got a really nice laptop with a bright highres screen.

That's TN...

Half my pics look god awful. The colors are way too cool.

Now I know what most people see when they see my pics online.

I once did a photoshoot for a chick... and half the people I showed it to said she looks like a ghost on there. Now on my TN screen, I see exactly what they saw.

That is the one benefit of using apple computers/macs that I truly give them props for. The screens are quite nice and therefore very useful for photogs when they want to show off their pic to a client. However im starting to see more and more laptops having ips as an option, howbeit still hard to find.

What laptops have IPS? AFAIK it's just one, but I can't remember the brand or model.

I thought Dell had an IPS screen on one of their XPS series? With the Ultrabooks coming out in force soon, I'd expect the number to go up.

I'm actually glad I have a shitty screen. So at least I know how my edits will look like to most people.

iirc, the 15" HP envy does, but not the 17"

at least once ipads take over most people won't be looking at shitty laptop screens anymore.

I'm using the 15" HP Envy. It does not have an IPS display, or at least mine doesn't. I have the late 2009 model. The DPI is amazing though, 1080p on a 15". I ran my huey calibration on it. The saturation of the reds is restored. It looks much better now. Although now when the angle shifts, the there's a cyan color hue on the top angle, and a magenta color hue from the bottom angle.

Can't wait for the new Asus Zenbook Primes. 13" Ultrabook with a 1920x1080 IPS screen!? Yes please...

Until they print them.

Maybe I'm just an idiot but I don't see the big deal with color matching. Paper and screen are inherently different so why even bother trying to match them?

But what does drive me crazy about TN screens is colors looking completely inaccurate, so that you really have no idea what other people see on their screens. My Dell laptop at work displays light olive green as yellow.

IF you have a properly calibrated screen, your prints should look identical to what you see on your computer.

In what light? Sunlight? Fluorescent?

Also, a screen can recreate an image much closer to reality because it's backlit. Of course the dynamic range isn't anywhere close to reality, but it's much closer than a print.

I've switched to IPS for all of my monitors. Even my X200 tablet is IPS.

An uncalibrated TN panel just looks horrible in comparison to a calibrated IPS panel.

You must always check your work on shitty consumer grade equipment.

In fact, most records nowadays, are mixed on an ipod/iphone using stock headphones, because that's the #1 listening device.

Yeah, so its sounds like shit on any half-decent stereo system. Wonderful...stupid sound deaf people.

Eh.. most people seem to think the lo-fi butchered photos from instagram look good, what do they know about image quality... With that said, I'm definitely glad I invested in a nice screen, and would never spend money on TN panels.

As nice as IPS and PVA screens are though, there's just nothing that can compete with AMOLED. The photos viewed on my phone seem better than real life colors.

AMOLED has far from accurate color reproduction though. Not that I don't like it; but it certainly wouldn't be my first choice for a primary display.

For me, the best display I've had the chance to use for extended periods of time is still a Dell 2408WFP. Oddly enough, I find the old 1800FP to be quite good too.

Only the next gen Retina screen is IPS. Current ones are all TN

This is incorrect. Thinkpad Tablets since the X41t have come with either S-PVA or IPS panels.

And that's exactly the problem with AMOLED. It's incapable of accurate color reproduction like a good IPS panel. That's why I chose to go with a phone that has an AH-IPS panel instead of one with an AMOLED panel.
