I had lyme disease a few years ago. I don't even know where I was bitten but I think it was when I was fishing as that was the only time I was outside in a wooded area where I could have really gotten bit. I was sick and had strange symptoms for like 10 days before I went to the doc and actually got a lyme panel. I think it was like they had to have 6 of 12 things match on the panel in order to "officially" diagnose lyme. I had like 4 or 5, but the doc was confident I had it and that we just caught it early, so she put me on some strong antibiotics. Within 2 days of starting the antibiotics my symptoms went away.

so i took a nice hike in the woods and was driving home when i felt something crawling on my arm.

i held my elbow up, figuring it was an ant or mosquito but NO IT WAS A TICK

it was still walking around so i stopped along the road and quickly grabbed a kleenex and grabbed the tick off my arm

but as i did, i felt a sting - so i think it got me when i got it

am i going to die of lyme disease?

i kept it in a sealed baggie to be studied by scientists... it's still crawling around in there.
Don't worry, we'll chalk it up to Covid.

Ticks have been around forever. I used to get them on me a lot when I was a young-un. ( now I'm 66 ). We would just pull them suckers off and burn them up with a match. I never got sick from them.

I guess they have slowly migrated northward into Canadia... Enjoy. Wait till you find one attached to your junk and he is swollen to the size of a marble.

They are fun esp when they explode when you're pulling them off your sack.

How do you "pull" one out of your... meat? With fingers? I never seen one and never wanted to.

Get him with your fingernails and pull... Sometimes the head remains in the skin and you have to dig a little deeper to get it all out.

See below before eating and after he is engorged with blood.

A lot of you people must never go outside or into the countryside. Ticks are just bugs that happen to drink blood to live. A little insect repellent around the ankles, waistband and openings of your clothes goes a long way to keeping them off of you.

Gotta say, this thread is making me skittish about hiking, wilderness, etc., which I love as much as the next person, but dang... ticks? Mosquitos are bad enough but ticks! RMSF, lyme, etc. Pulling the buggers out with tweezers, inspecting, using a match. I mean lyme, the symptoms are things that I think about just in day to day living. I feel tired and weak sometimes, I suppose most everyone does. Don't want to have to be wondering if I have lyme (which I've wondered at times over the last 10-15 years).

i am still alive and no symptoms yet, aside from itchiness on my arm and some headaches (which i usually have all the time but these are on the other side of my head)

i think i'm done hiking though... just gonna stick to the road and paved paths. no more walks in the woods and grasslands for me.

I have written a poam:

A summer day filled with adventure
Taking a hike to see the joy
A day of witnessing life and beauty
Not everything is friendly in nature
small biting insects attempt to feast on Brian
Carefully, he removes the blood feasters
Soon comes the worries of infection
Rolling the dice on nature may turn snake eyes
Will the sickness cometh?
He will survive.

You, sir, are an optimist!

Uh, the only hike I've taken since the pandemic began was around 10 miles up the hill (800' elevation climb) all on concrete or asphalt. AFAIK, my boots never touched soil.

Before pandemic I'd play golf ~2x/week, 6 months out of the year. I tried to wear pants, not shorts, to be safer for the ticks. Wore high ankled socks (have never understood all the guys with those low low cut socks!). Nowadays, though, I hear my home course has been overrun by newbie golfers, who are very annoying. They wanted a recreation safe from covid, and have infested the course to the point where both parking lots are full all that time, which never used to happen even on weekends. I haven't visited the course since pre-pandemic. Covid has bitten me in the ass in many ways, but AFAIK I have never contracted the bug itself.

You can buy permethrin treated clothes.
Or even treat them yourself.
