My roommate and I went to Walmart late one night. I had a much nicer car so we took mine. My roommate drove an absolute junker - like a $300 POS.

Anyway this old lady comes up to us and has some sob story about how she ran out of gas and she's trying to pick up her kids at a bus station after coming home from some other state blah blah blah.. I told her, "No."

My roommate, feeling sorry, gives her $10.. Then, she just walks to the next person in the parking lot, right in front of us, and starts with the same sob story...

So after our 30-minute trip inside Walmart, we are coming back to my car when we see her get into her car... a brand-new Jeep Grand Cherokee...

Stupid me had to open to the door, but then I closed it and said I can't help him. He said, "But I'm your neighbor!" I went back to sleep and that was it.

I should've told him that if he needed help, I'll call the cops and have them drive him there.

had you ever seen him before?

A couple years ago I was just leaving work and a guy on the corner was acting all distraught. I asked if he was OK and he told me a story about a broken-down car, kids left in it, $18 needed for a part so they could get home, please help me get my kids home, blah blah.

I was certain it was a scam because I remembered him standing on the same corner a few days ago so I offered him a ride to go get the part. That caught him off guard and he mumbled he didn't have the money so it wouldn't do any good to head out to the parts store.

Then I offered to pay for the part too. He was stuck between admitting a scam or playing along, so he played along and got in. I asked what part he needed and he showed me a soiled scrap of paper with some number written on it, saying that's the part number for the circuit breaker (yeah, right) he needed. I said "I bet it's a Plymouth - those circuit breakers are always leaving people stranded." He acted so surprised that I guessed it was a Plymouth.

Then I said let's go pick your kids up, you can't leave them in a broken-down car alone. But he said that his "cousin" was with them so it was OK, we didn't have to do that. Yeah, OK.

So we started for the highway and he panicked, saying that his buddy has that part at his gas station and we should head there instead (it happened to be in the bad part of town). I countered with a story that MY buddy runs the parts store near me, and I'd get it cheaper.

I don't know what he was thinking at that point but he shut up. We drove about 6 miles to the parts store and I said let's go in and get the part. On the way walking into the store I casually asked what kind of car he had and he said an Impala. Oopsie. I said I forgot my wallet in the car, went back to the car, and drove home. I don't think he was real happy watching me drive away.

I felt bad later, but I hate people like that.

you might have felt worse if he pulled a knife or gun out on you

so now I'm smelling some bullshit because I've been approached before with this no money scam, but I lowered my defense this time and gave him a little benefit of the doubt since he said he's my neighbor and his kid is very ill. Big mistake!!

So being the nice guy I am, I get his info and hands him a 20.

To reaffirm my suspicion, I looked up the address and it doesn't FCUKING exist.

If I see him again, he's going to the hospital for real.

He's going to the hospital because you were a nice guy? Or is he going to the hospital over $20?

 grow up. Learn. Never EVER give out charity to individuals. Ever.

Good point, but he was trying to avoid riding with me to go get the part. That said, I don't think I'd do it again.

i'm not that hung up on the $20, it's the principal, I'm just upset that i was taken advantage of.

Hmm ... He lied; plain and simple. Shame on him for it. Cudos to you for being a thoughtful human being and helping somebody in need.

I was working late one night at a pizza place when I was in college. Some guy drove up in a minivan and gave me a story about how he needed cash to get his car out of the impound and the nearest ATM wasn't working - usual BS but I didn't know it at the time. The guy needed 40 bux and he said he would give me the whole backseat out of his minivan as collateral. He even gave me his contact info just in case.

Sure enough the guy never came back. Contact info was bogus. So I sat there with the backseat of a minivan on the sidewalk in front of our store. I didn't get ripped off too bad however, the minivan was only a couple years old and worked out well for video game seats. It was probably worth more that 40 bux.
