I feel for the OP as it really shouldn't matter whether or not he's at home. People should have the integrity to leave things alone that do not belong to them. Thieves broke into my car two years ago and took my Blade B450x, Spektrum DX8 radio and batteries all in an aluminum carry case altogether worth around $1.4k and I was livid plus they got my ipod classic gen 5 160 gig out of the console. Fortunately I didn't have anything else of value or they'd have gotten it as well.
Amazon, like other retailers, fall under UCC Article 2 and the shipped product falls under the responsibility of the carrier once it has been transferred to them. I would hope that it was insured and even so file a police report. Next time you have a valuable shipment coming log into your account with that particular shipper, you should have one with each shipper for good measure, and log into your account and change the delivery setting for that particular shipment to protect it. I would have them hold the package at their facility and go there and get it in person to protect it.
