Why not get stuff delivered to you at work? I've done that for numerous jobs.

Obviously if I was getting a huge TV delivered and I was taking mass transit home, I'd have taken a day off and waited at home.

But for those who drive to work and back, just get it sent to work most of the time. And the rest, work should still be good for most-sized packages.
My daughter's watch came today. It was supposed to come Dec 7. I opened the dhl website a few times thinking about changing the address to work, but didn't know what time they were coming. Delivery has late hours this time of year. I ended up doing nothing, and hoping for the best. It paid off for a change. Point is work isn't reliable either.

if lots of people actually went to jail and the news made a big deal about it, yes.
If they dont put any real effort into catching the guys or the judge lets em walk, probably no.

That's the part that sucks, it seems they're more concerned about virtual "theft" like piracy or other petty crimes like drugs than actual real theft where actual real material items are lost. Here in my city theft has gone so bad that cops now turn a blind eye to it. They basically tell you "lock it or lose it" even if it's a break in. Which is a drastic change from say 10ish years ago when my parents got broken into and cops followed up even a year later to see if I potentially had more info. (was my stuff that was stolen and I knew the guy that did it but not evidence proof to bust him)

That said it's still good to have video especially if you can manage to catch them live. A PTZ remote controlled gun could be useful for something like this too.

I thinking of starting a new business and one source of revenue may be receiving packages for people in the hood. Aside from porch pickers, there's the forced signature for a $10 item and having to pick it up across town. Sounds great until people rob the place or say a package is missing. Thank goodness for liability insurance and exculpatory clauses? Virtually no barrier to entry, just endless liability issues.

Is it ok to shoot a taser to a thief if I catch him on the spot?

Why not pickup from an Amazon locker? Even in my small suburb there's 7 locations.

Sadly probably illegal. That's the problem with the law system, it actually protects thieves. Anything you figure you can do to prevent or stop them is probably illegal. Alarm systems and cameras only go so far.

State laws can always vary ofcourse, but you have the legal right to use reasonable force to a person who you reasonably believe to be committing theft. The issue is what "reasonable force" would be defined as. Though I highly doubt criminal charges would be brought against you, civil is a whole different matter.

More to the fact that I work ten minutes from home and when something gets delivered I can come back to the house and since the package can't be seen from the street even better. Never had anything stolen yet. But have had USPS deliveries that never made it to my house.

Right there with you. Have nothing but constant problems with USPS whether it be lost mail or packages. They are too lazy to even get out of their trucks anymore.

Ring Doorbell. Everyone should have one. I have for years. Also, UPS MyChoice is free and allows packages to be held for pickup at the customer center

Sucks. Had something similar happen to me a few months back. Went out, saw that my package was delivered via tracking on my phone, got back within an hour of delivery - found a ripped open empty box. Neighbor had something stolen the same day too.

Yet theft exists at stores, there's rape, murder, arson, etc, etc. The tools are there so use them.

Once again, none of these things will actually protect your package so you might as well spend that money on something that actually does: a PO box.

Not everything ships to a POB. I have had one for +20 years and I have had some things off of Amazon not allow POB delivery, and at least one not consciously aware that their own shipper (Amazon.jp using DHL) never ships to a POB. While I agree that shipping to a POB is better than the home address, it isn't an absolute guarantee. Whenever there is a human involved in the transit of an item to be delivered, mistakes can and will happen. This has nothing to do with theft, but it can result in the same end results.

Shocked that they don't require signature on purchases over $100. Seems really, really dumb.

For some revenge, place the same Amazon box full of dog/cat crap in front of your door, and see how long it lasts.

If it's valuable to have it shipped to work, other than that I don't mind if it goes home.

Adding signature confirmation costs extra to ship, and as long as there's less theft claims than the increase in shipping costs then they're money ahead.

Don't have the right address on the box or the crap is likely to come back to your porch without the box in the middle of the night.

I wonder how hard it would be to rig up an exploding dye pack like banks use in their bundles of cash. Steal box, open, poof!

Just had a monitor dropped off in the original packaging. Thought they would at least put it inside a brown box... sat on my porch for a few hours before I got home but all was good. It was only $60 so would not have been the end of the world if it was stolen (although crappy obviously), but luckily I have not had any issues at my new house. Also had a nice subwoofer dropped off in original packaging come to think of it.

Anything that requires signature or is really expensive I will work from home to sign for. A camera though seems like it might make sense either way.

I feel for the OP as it really shouldn't matter whether or not he's at home. People should have the integrity to leave things alone that do not belong to them. Thieves broke into my car two years ago and took my Blade B450x, Spektrum DX8 radio and batteries all in an aluminum carry case altogether worth around $1.4k and I was livid plus they got my ipod classic gen 5 160 gig out of the console. Fortunately I didn't have anything else of value or they'd have gotten it as well.

Amazon, like other retailers, fall under UCC Article 2 and the shipped product falls under the responsibility of the carrier once it has been transferred to them. I would hope that it was insured and even so file a police report. Next time you have a valuable shipment coming log into your account with that particular shipper, you should have one with each shipper for good measure, and log into your account and change the delivery setting for that particular shipment to protect it. I would have them hold the package at their facility and go there and get it in person to protect it.

I wonder how many people have shipped themselves something very expensive and then stolen it off their own porch? Capture it on a security camera - shady figure wearing a dark hoodie, can't see his face. So UPS/FedEx and the seller both have evidence that would be very difficult to dispute.

OP, have you heard anything back from Amazon? I assume they're replacing the lost items.

Nothing yet and it's surprising given Amazon's top customer service. I guess this high value can be a cause for the delay.

Worst case I can request money back from credit card but I really want the items and price went up $150 now.

Did you make a police report, and show them that as well?
