It's so you can leave the door open (for temperature/cooling) but keep the bugs out. Replace screens with glass in the winter, and it helps if your front door is a bit on the drafty side.

I thought they were a bit weird when I moved here but they're just window dressing (get it?) and not meant to be anything but that unless you actually live in tornado country where you probably have real shutters. They're there to add a bit of color to the siding, that's all.

Actually shutters are very thermally inefficient. Blinds, drapes and such are much better. So what you are saying about AC isn't accurate.

IMO wood shutters work great for keeping heat out but, they are ugly and bulky while being inside the house... I have some that came with the house I bought last August. When I open them I can feel the heat/cold instantly. I know the window sucks as it is a single pane aluminum and we are replacing it.

We have faux bricks, faux flooring, faux fireplaces, faux stones, even Faux News, why not faux shutters?

And faux boobies, faux butts, and ... I'm just saying that shutters are pretty low on the list of faux things to be offended by.

Wood shutters have a typical R-Value of 3, So they aren't bad. But there are shades with better efficiency.

Most houses in the US have this, especially new ones. I personally do not like the look of fake shutters nailed to the brick on the outside of my house. Which is why when they were building my house I told them not to do it. They still put it on one window I had to rip off like they couldn't believe I asked for such a thing.

If you've ever spent 12 hours putting up hurricane shutters those are the most beautiful shutters ever seen.
