While I agree that it's a great movie, the ending really let me down.

The killing of Mills' wife, Tracy, doesn't make any sense in the context of the movie. In killing her, he destroys the one redeeming character in the movie. Throughout the movie, she is presented as good and virtuous. That Doe would kill the one person that embodies the morality and lifestyle that he preaches man to follow is hypocritical and inconceivable from such a steadfast psycopath.
To me, it seems like the ending was added to give the movie that final shock and close with a bang, and is effective as such. Unfortunately, it comes at the expense of the underlying theme of the movie.
