I have a couple. They're ugly and appropriate for use under a kitchen sink or in the garage.
If you're putting a trashcan or wastebasket somewhere where people can see it, you're talking metal, probably shiny, probably matched to your appliances if it's in the kitchen, etc.
~$80 for a trash can that looks good next to the stove, or ~$80 for a hunk of wood that sits on a shelf? That trash can is a deal.
If you're at a place in life where you can spend a couple grand on home furnishings to make your environment comfortable and/or something you can take some pride in, $80 for a trashcan is trivial.
Now, $200 for a pair of jeans? That's just insane.
Except, you know, this is a rental apartment in a probably not very nice area of San Jose with a window A/C unit complimented by classy plywood shield to fill in the space. Just so you have an idea.
