And if it matters, when I set myself up with a HDTV I'll probably buy the bluray, along with other movies that I've watched on my PC. It's not really because I don't want to pay, it's because it's more convenient. No waiting in line, no crowds, no crying kids etc.

I'm sure it was asked but unless the theater specifically says this is 3d I should assume it's only a non-3d version of avatar, right?
I saw Avatar with my GF on a fake "IMAX" 3d-screen. I say fake imax because it was not as large as it should have been compared to the real IMAX theaters i've been too.
