Gone Baby Gone and No Country for Old Men are both from last year. I really liked Gone Baby Gone - definitely deserves a wider audience.

I still liked them better Seriously though, I thought Batman was just ok and wouldn't add it to my DVD collection with the likes of:

Seven
Million Dollar Baby
Forrest Gump
Shawshank Redemption
Lock Stock and 2 Smoking Barrels
Good Will Hunting
Rain Man
etc..

These are the movies that in my "holy shit that was good" category. Not Dark Knight...

I was totally with you until I went back and saw that you had Million Dollar Baby in that list.

I really enjoyed TDK, a fantastic action flick. But a brilliant/top 10 film? Nah. It's good for it's genre.

All the new Batman movies are just....okay. To me. Fine if others like them, but I don't see how they're all that great.

NOt really, before watching the movie I thought this as well and was hell-bent on giving heath a bad review. But he performed. He performed well.

Rubbish. I think he did a great job even if he was still alive. I've seen Batman (the original) a few times and Ledger > Nicholson.

As for Begins being better... in my opinion, the first movie for a superhero that introduces a superhero is usually the worst one. This doesn't mean Batman Begins was a bad movie, but the reason being is that the introductions are typically lengthy and sometimes not very interesting. In the sequels, the hero has been established and it's typically hero vs villain from the get go!

It was alright.

I love it, but there is one movie that tops it, IMO. Iron Man.

I actually disagree with that... even though I did enjoy Iron Man. To be honest, watching Iron Man more than once makes you realize how crappy the fight with Iron Monger really was... it was incredibly boring. Now don't get me wrong though... RDJ!

Well, with your poor taste in movies, it sounds like you've found the right woman for you. If you can't watch Iron Man and enjoy the fun dialog with RDJ... I hate to be mean, but you're hopeless.

Coming from the person who couldn't find Forgetting Sarah Marshall or Pineapple Express funny. I couldn't stop cracking up during the entirety of either movie.

come one people, there are plenty of films year-in and year-out that aren't of the brainless action genre. This is not the only genre that exists... And despite these limited tastes, not one of them has ever managed to stick around in the best-of-year category.

I thought the movie was mediocre.

The whole lip licking schtick got old for me. I thought Ledger's performance wasn't really memorable.

Another vote here from someone who found it terribly overrated, and who struggled to find any redeeming qualities whatsoever

I thought the score was incredible.

You gotta be kidding. QoS was an average movie at best.

I like guys that get blockbuster movies, wait for them to come out on DVD to see them, watch them on their laptop's with 100 things going on around them, and then posting about how blah the movie was.

I really do.

i agree. the ledger role was overrated and the movie was not really that great. it was entertaining, but it really wasn't that good. but then again, it is batman. i can see how so many people defend it. but honestly, it was just ok.

If you thought Batman Begins was better, you're crazy. Batman Begins sucked.

I mean, you're right that it's not life-changing or high art or anything. It was just a summer action movie. But as a summer action movie, it was damn good.

Wow I definitely didn't see the crowd of negative criticism coming. Everyone I know who's seen it (which is twenty some-odd people) loved it. My friend and I walked out of the theater and basically called it various forms of awesome for about 15 minutes straight. It's easily in my top 10. Alongside some of the other movies listed in this thread (Forrest Gump and Good Will Hunting specifically)

Batman Begins was good, TDK was fucking awesome. I just got sucked into it more than I did in Batman Begins. It was entertaining when it needed to be, serious when it needed to be, and downright fucked up when it needed to be (mostly due to Ledger). Plus you can analyze it to no end if you're into that kind of thing (granted you could do that with BB too).

Everyone who said it was cheesy, uh... it wasn't. SOAP Operas are cheesy. Batman Begins had a few cheesy moments (thank you Katie Holmes). TDK had next to zero (if any). A lot of what you may have interpreted as "cheese" are actually valid literary themes. Even then they were hardly presented in a "cheesy" manner.

As for corny... how so? The Bank robbery scene was designed to be entertaining obviously. I laughed and cheered my ass off. Same story with the Joker blowing up the hospital (although that was no cheering and more of a WTF laugh). The Batman/Joker/Dent chase was anything but corny, neither was the climactic battle.

The plot was complex as hell, the characters were complex as hell, the acting was excellent on all sides (with Ledger singled out obviously. The guy deserves an Oscar dead or not). This movie was well deserving of the hype it got. I wouldn't call it the "best movie of all time", but it's up there.

For people who say it was too long, well, IMO you can never make a movie too long unless it absolutely sucks, but that's me. If they made a 12 hour version of each LOTR movie to include more content from the books I'd gladly wait for a day off and dive in, maybe pause it to take a piss a few times. Just keep the pizza/popcorn coming and I'm good.

And DomS, sounds like you were too confused by the plot to make an accurate judgment. From the sound of your posts you missed entire scenes.

The movie was good but not as good as everyone says. WAAAY overrated imo and tried to cram to much into it and didn't mesh well. Also someone saying QoS was the movie of the year??? WTF that movie wasn't even a good action movie let alone a good Bond movie.

Are there really that many repressed losers out there who identify with the ideals of batman that they see themselves enacting that life for themselves if only given the chance, that their undying praise of this movie drowns out those that say 'wait...that's it??'

Oh, and Heath Ledger's performance was average. I'm sorry, but if he was alive today no one would be making that big of a deal of it. I keep hearing about how it was such a dark performance that it drove him back to using pills.....um.....it wasn't THAT dark. I mean he had a few moments, but other than that...

Overall a movie with average amounts of action, average acting performances, below average character depth....and that's about it.

I agree with you about Bale's performance. That "Batman voice" he does gets kinda stupid at times.

Where I have to disagree with you is about Ledger's performance. He put subtleties in that character that people are still finding. As I understand it, almost all the mannerisms that the Joker had in the movie were developed by Ledger.

He made that character and it wasn't as if it was some obscure character that he could do whatever he wanted with... he somehow found a way to make a farfetched comic book villain into a living breathing psychopath. It is rare in movies, especially huge action movies, to look at the villain and believe that this type of person could actually exist. Ledger made him real. The final plot (the boats) were the only thing that seemed unreal and out of place and I blame that on the story, not his acting.

My girlfriend and I both enjoyed The Dark Knight. We also enjoyed Iron Man and a slew of the other movies mentioned in this thread. To me, that's all that matters. For me, Iron Man was a great mindless action movie, where as TDK was way more of a thinker. Both great in their own way.

There were a couple of really cringe-worthy scenes, and some obvious story errors that ruined it ever so slightly for me. Either way, I enjoyed it in the end.
