I just went for my nightly run

My wife and I were out for a run, getting out some aggression after fighting over the mortgage on our first house that we are buying. I pulled up at the bottom of a hill to see if she wanted to stop, and we walked around the corner while she told me why I was wrong.

While I tried to stare holes in my feet, we turned a corner and saw three chickens strutting away in the front yard of yet another suburban home. They weren't caged, they weren't leashed, they didn't have electronic collars on them. After a long day this pretty much left me dumbfounded, so we stared and I tried to fit this into my worldview, when one of the geniuses tried to make a beeline for the road. We herded them back into the yard, knocked on the idiots door whose chickens had gotten out, and got no help.

The couple was watching jeopardy, but had no idea where chickens came from. They also had no phone book to call animal control, but the neighbors had apparently seen them strutting down the road earlier while cars slowed down, stared, and took pictures.

The hungry Samaritan that I am, we nabbed then and caught a ride with the Jepordanians, hoping a quick call to the pound would clear things up. We volunteer there(though we are relapsed) and I know they added a small barn during the last expansion to handle the occasional horse, although so far I believe they have only had goats.

Animal control is afraid of chickens, we have to hold them until the vet comes in tomorrow at 9:30. In the meantime there are 3 well cared for and good natured chickens in a dog crate in my driveway. Anyone got chicken tips? I'm hoping to keep them alive for the night, its only getting down to 51 and I figure they can live in the cage in the garage for the night.

my uncle and gramma were telling me how they grew up on a farm, and as kids their mom had them wring a chickens neck from time to time for dinner

"swing it harder! you gotta BREAK the neck!"

My computer and I were online visiting ATOT, passing some time after working all day to make rent for the apartment I am renting. I pulled up a thread near the top of the page to see if it was interesting, and I read through the post while wondering where the PICS OF WIFE were.

Put an old blanket over the cage, maybe give them some bits of carrot or some other veg that's simple, some water as well.

You should hang on to the little buggers, animal control is just going to destroy them after a day or two anyways. They make amusing pets.

Our shelter is no kill as far as dogs, cats, guinea pigs, rabbits etc go. So I imagine they will stay around as well. Like I said I volunteer so if nothing else I'll have them give them back before it comes to that.

These guys have to be some kids 4h or FFA project, or at least someone local who keeps them in the backyard.

Moved them into the garage, we have one old broom handle and a mop stuck in the cage for them to perch on. They are squeezed into the garage behind the bikes, so I had to pushed the mop handle through so the door would close. After a minute of playing chicken foosball, working the sticks back and forth we covered them with a blanket and called it a night.

Put a heat light (incandescent light bulb) in there for the chicken if you worries that it is too cold for them, but IMHO it shouldn't be too bad in the garage.

It's no Jersey, but we live 2 miles from the city center, pop 250k+. It's the first time we've encountered them on our barefoot jogs.

I think they should survive, 50f and hanging out with each other. Gave them another water bowl that they hopefully won't knock over and tossed a blanket over them.

50F is just fine for the chickens. Ours put up with temperatures as cold as 20 below zero during the winter, and they do just fine. No need to cover them or even bother bringing them indoors, unless you have possums or other such critters that prowl the neighborhood at night.

I just got rid of most of my chickens earlier this evening. I was letting them free-range on our property (and the neighbor's miniature-horse pasture), but they kept coming up on our porch to eat the cat food, and kept crapping all over the porch & back patio. I kept a small handful & got rid of the rest for the winter. Tomorrow, I get to pressure wash the porch.

My wife told me to ask Dr. Pizza, i told her you would find the thread eventually.

So, any idea what breed they are? They really are quite friendly, and if I'm not careful she is going to try to talk me into urban chicking farming at the new house. IIRC we are allowed 3 or 4 chickens in the city.

I just went through this, and decided to go ahead and put the 20% down.
