i keep reading everywhere that brown eyes are the most common... is it true?

Me too. Means they both had the Brown allele and Blue allele. We got lucky and got a Blue allele from each.

OP, I'm going to guess it's a combination of color contacts + you just not noticing brown eyes on people because they're so common and not exactly "striking" in most cases.

I think my dad has the weakest genes ever... he's your typical dark brown hair / brown eyes frenchie. my mom has down brown hair and blue eyes.

my sister ended up with the dark brown + blue like my mom, but I somehow stumbled into light brown hair on my head, blonde body hair (and multi-colored facial hair) + green eyes

your eyes don't look green.


green eyes are very rare, and actually a result of a mutation of the recessive "blue eye" gene.

Brown eyes are the dominant trait and blue are recessive. Same with hair color - darker hair colors are the dominant trait over light. If you want to look at it like a biologist:

B = brown eyed trait, dominant
b = blue eyed trait, recessive

If you have BB, Bb, or bB then you get brown eyes. You only get blue with bb. That's why brown is more common and in fact the reason why blue eyes are being bred out of existance.

Though, many girls dye their hair. I wouldn't be surprised if a fair number of them wear color changing contacts.

My license says blue eyes. My husband says blue/gray/green/hazel. He has perfectly blue eyes. We'll see what our kiddo gets.

Blue eye color was originally a (pretty) mutation, and my guess is that it is/was beneficial for northern parts of europe, much like light colored skin is beneficial for UV absorption. It's the melanin, a pigment, that determines eye color and skin color.
