I killed a speckled Kingsnake

I killed a snake in my yard. I didn't know what type of snake it was. Come to find out it's a speckled king snake. I feel bad. Well I will know next time. That is all.

My ex (not an ex then) once told me to kill a snake she found in a bush. Being the chivalrous Knight I am, I charged the bush and killed it with a swift stroke of my shovel. Later I found out it was a harmless snake (forget exactly which) that eats mice and frogs and was really just minding its own business. I felt bad for the snake too. I still blame her for the senseless death even today.

Aw that sucks. I mean, if you have children or pets, its natural to want to kill any snake that ventures into your property. I wouldn't say it bad that it happened to be a kingsnake, but if you don't have any pets, yeah, go ahead and let the next one you see live. They take care of the vermin in the area, and aren't venomous, but sounds like you already knew all that.
So, don't beat yourself up over it.

I was usually the one who'd be bringing snakes back to the house ever since I could pick one up with certainty that I wouldn't be bitten. My mom just didn't like that I was going near snakes (possibility of venomous ones, that sort of thing), and my dad plain hated snakes.
I did know full well not to get near a snake unless I knew for sure what kind it was. It probably helped that garter snakes seemed to be the only things around. I have never seen another kind of wild snake - and I've never been bitten by any snake, wild or captive.

..even rattle snakes are good to have around if you can keep em at a distance. Gopher snakes will kill the rats/mice/other rodents including gophers. Mutch safer then a rattle snake.
