I know nothing about Rock and Roll

So School of Rock was on TBS tonight and even though I am not a Jack Black fan, I watched it. It was pretty funny but it made me realize I don't know anything about Rock and Roll.

So, where do I begin? I don't know how long this interest will last but I feel like exploring the genre a little bit. What are the quintessential albums/bands I should look into?

Why do you listen to it if you do? Any memorable concerts?

Well there is a great song you need to listen to by a guy named Rick Astley.

Are you serious? What do you listen to?

Back in 1994, when I was 9, we got satellite television. Growing up in Saudi Arabia, without satellite TV, I had no previous exposure to any 'western' music. But that year, I watched a music video. I didn't care for the lead singer but was thoroughly captivated by the tall cigarette-smoking man with crazy hair, wailing on a Les Paul on a really windy day, awkward knees=bent pose outside a church in the middle of a desert. It was epic.

Seriously, you gotta tell us something. Which of these appeals to you more: AC/DC, Aerosmith, Green Day, Linkin Park, Metallica, Nirvana, U2? You surely must know some of them.

You'd be better off starting by taking a class at the local community college about the history of rock and roll.

Well currently I listen to hip-hop (the activism kind) , good rap (BIG, Tupac, Run DMC), reggae (Marley/Manu Chao), Johnny Cash, and classical if I'm trying to get work done. I know heavy metal won't appeal to me since I can't understand the words but I've heard Jimi Hendrix guitar solos before and thought they sounded pretty awesome.

I know Aerosmith and Green Day songs but I never really got into the genre I guess. My first CD ever was Third Eye Blind that some much older cousin gave to me fwiw.

I want to explore the old stuff like Led Zeppelin to see if I like it. I've heard Hotel California like a billion times if that counts for anything.

That's an awesome chart with all those bands!

I forgot to add, Norah Jones, Amy Winehouse and other jazz/blues. I like music I can sing along to but just listening is nice sometimes too. Thanks for the list, I'll check some out.

That's a *very* abbreviated history of rock & roll. There's much that's been left out, and more to come, but I'm tired tonight.

First of all, Green Day is not, never was, and never will be "rock and roll". Secondly, Hotel California was not done by Led Zeppelin, it was done by The Eagles.

Kids these days have NO IDEA what rock and roll is. Third Eye Blind? LOL

I didn't say any of those were rock and roll, I was just replying to the post asking me about those particular bands. I know The Eagles did Hotel California, those were separate thoughts. Also, Third Eye Blind was just a random tidbit in there to give a better idea of my musical history. Yes, I don't know anything about rock and roll but I doubt most people here know a lot about the music I listen to.

Start with Ike Turner and work your way up, that's where Rock N Roll started.

rock and roll is such a huge genre of music. You need to narrow down the sub-genre you are interested in.

you could do this by decade.

50's are more rockabilly style and some vocal groups thrown in. This is the 1st generation of rock. The sounds are raw and the instruments very old school. Great music.

60's bring in many new styles and sub-genres. Easy listening stuff, vocal groups, beginnings of hard rock and heavy metal. The Motown sound is huge. Psychedelia peaks in this decade.

70's brought in some odd stuff. Heavy metal was getting bigger and changing. Hard rock was growing too especially due to an Australian group. Country was popular as was disco. The beginnings of hip-hop and rap. Pop music was everywhere. Punk was peaking. Arena rock was popular.

80's were by far the best decade for music. Heavy metal became more Glam oriented and popular. Disco faded out and became synthpop. Hard rock was doing well. Pop music was fun with many one hit wonders. Punk was making a small resurgence. Rap and hip-hop became hugely popular. Late 80's and early 90's were dominated by House music.
