Rockabilly

Carl Perkins

Jerry Lee Lewis

Buddy Holly

More later....

No Gene Vincent, Eddie Cochran, Warren Smith or Chuck Berry? Actually I would just recommend Sun Record's entire catalog.

I haven't gotten to them yet. There's too much to list, so I was just putting in 3 of each style. Hell, I've got 5gb of just doo wop in my collection :^D

80's were by far the best decade for music. Heavy metal became more Glam oriented and popular. Disco faded out and became synthpop. Hard rock was doing well. Pop music was fun with many one hit wonders. Punk was making a small resurgence. Rap and hip-hop became hugely popular. Late 80's and early 90's were dominated by House music.

Johnny Cash Hell, Cash was on Sun Records and had a little bit of rockabilly then. God, he looks young in that one.

Roy Orbison toured with Perkins and Cash too I think, but I am not familiar with his stuff back then if he was more rockabilly or had already started on the slower stuff like Blue Bayou that I am more familiar with.

EDIT: Looks like he did: Roy Orbison

Cool,

you guys should check this out

that is crap.

If you want to learn rock and roll, i would recommend picking out a few of the classic albums, reading up on the major bands and solo artists particularly of the first 20 years or so (1955-1975 era).

I would recommend the library. A few months ago I picked up a book called Flowers In the Dustbin, which chronicled the history rock from the late 40s to the late 70s. Good read and showed a lot of history, From Bill Haley and Fats Domino to the Beatles to Velvet Underground.

Yeah, I can recommend the library too. Cheap (free!). Check out some books, read, check out records/CDs, listen, read, check out, listen... take it from there. It's really infinite. I heard a super great book is Greil Marcus' Mystery Train, although I've not read it.

Just listen to AC/DC's Back in Black a couple hundred times if you want to understand Rock & Roll.

So, where do I begin? I don't know how long this interest will last but I feel like exploring the genre a little bit. What are the quintessential albums/bands I should look into?

Why do you listen to it if you do? Any memorable concerts?

I have just the thread for you.
Don't let the title of the thread fool you it is right on-topic.

Thanks for all the info and links so far.

I listened to a lot of the youtube clips and definitely enjoyed some of them. From lxskllr's first list, I liked the blues and rockability and from the other list that Link Wray link was sweet music.

I already knew I liked Johnny Cash (Get Rhythm is one of my favorites) but that Warren Smith track was pretty cool. I guess I didn't realize how large the genre was. I assumed it was all bands like AC/DC and Led Zepplin (which I haven't gotten to yet so I don't even know their sound).

Still going through all the links but so far so good. The library is a good idea, I forgot about that. Surprisingly that aliens thread ^ is actually pretty helpful...

cool!

I am not sure if you are ready for Led Zeppelin.

They cover such a wide variety of musical styles. They are the kings of all rock and roll. The best album to start with would be #4. It has the best mix of styles and some truly epic songs.

I prefer music from the 60's to 80's.

Just don't go to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland. There's all kinds of non-Rock and Roll crap in there.

Back in 1994, when I was 9, we got satellite television. Growing up in Saudi Arabia, without satellite TV, I had no previous exposure to any 'western' music. But that year, I watched a music video. I didn't care for the lead singer but was thoroughly captivated by the tall cigarette-smoking man with crazy hair, wailing on a Les Paul on a really windy day, awkward knees=bent pose outside a church in the middle of a desert. It was epic.

Seriously, you gotta tell us something. Which of these appeals to you more: AC/DC, Aerosmith, Green Day, Linkin Park, Metallica, Nirvana, U2? You surely must know some of them.

Be sure to touch on some Pink Floyd and some Black Sabbath.

Pulse, the DVD that version of Time is from, is simply superb. It is one of the best music DVD's you will ever find, even though they were starting to get old.

Then, for some humor and fantastic musicianship, try out some Zappa.
