Another "deathstar" gone belly up this morning.. This time it's my WORK pc :| Damnit! I lost a lot of stuff this time! Not "work files" necessarily, I keep those on the network, but rather a lot of custom settings and stuff.

Man! I'll be restoring my system all day!!!&^#)!

When you see a Hard Drive sitting on someone's desk, you ask them "Is that a dead hard drive?"
Seems to be the talk around my desk...

So my Hard Drive seems to be a "Star" this morning... sitting on my desk!!! hehe

Yea... that sounded corny.

#$(#@$ IBM and their POS Drives!!!!!

A couple of years ago IBM hard drives were all the rage on anandtech. Whenever anyone asked about which HD was the best the answer was IBM, IBM, IBM!
Just another example of the bandwagon effect gone bad. lol
Another example would have been the MSI K7T-pro2a. Since anandtech was using these for servers they must be great, right? Then they started to die. oops.
Maybe we should start a "hall of fame" for bandwagons gone bad.

Macro2, having had friends with deathstars (if it ain't WD or Maxtor, I don't want it! ), personally having my own K7T Pro2A go bad (not to mention my dad's, and worst of all, customers' !!!), that sounds like a good idea. It'd be quite entertaining I think.

On a side note, why don't hardware sites note these things? The mobos that go bad and bad HD series, etc.? Many people who don't go through forums would never know if they didn't see it on the front page of anand's or tom's (which is pretty good now that tom himself is actually doing less of the real work).

Cuz they'd never get any sponsorship from those manufacturers if they did.

Actually, I still like IBM hard drives a lot. Possibly because I've never had a Death Star fail on me. IBM should license that name from Lucasfilm. Who wouldn't want a piece of hardware called the Death Star?

the time,and they were real good about it. I am now rma'ing a Maxtor;
and yikes I'm using a msi K7T266 pro2-A! Have a $50 gift certificate,
and was going to treat myself to a new set of speakers, now maybe instead
a mobo before it's to late. Have my eye on a gigabyte GA-7vaxp
should I wait for the via 400a

I would if I were you. Dual Channel DDR and (from what I hear) 400MHz FSB support. That spells nice upgradability right through to Bartons.

My boss asked me to install an IBM drive in his home computer. Would you believe it was dead right out of the box? Won't spin up!!!

Well once upon a time they did have damn good drives. If you go back to the early 90's it was Western Digital's name you'd hear chanted from most any enthusiast... by the mid 90's no one in their right mind would touch them. A few yars ago they regained part of their once prominent status, and are reasonably highly regarded by most nowadays.
Every manufacturer has their bad spells, and IBM seems to be slowly pulling out of theirs.

Shouldn't the Thread Title read "I know why they are called "Deathstar""

Or do you actually know why they're called deskstars?

I've got 2 75GXP's running strong 24/7 for over 1.5 years. My sister has a K7T-Pro2 in her pc (that I built for her) which is also running strong 24/7 for 9 months now. I've had pretty good luck so far, I guess.

I just had a 60GXP die on me yesterday. Started the clicking and seeking noises. The IBM drive fitness test said it had "excessive shock". Im having trouble returning it because I don't have any of the required foam to ship it =(

I have that MB & I've had no problems with it for over a year now.

Or did I speak too soon?

You get that too? What IS that? LOL. It happens religiously close to the same time everyday like it's intentional.

In other news, I had 2 DeskStars die on me. My backup drive died, and before my replacement came, my main drive kicked the bucket too. 2 deaths in a week and a half. Lost everything. Ugh. I still have a 120GXP working (though with that daily noise, I'm not exactly trusting it.) 2 months and counting. The race is on.

Hmmmm

oddly enough I just lost a K7T Pro2 this weekend after about a good year of use...

I really like the idea of a section that would keep track of these sort of things

Well at least you get to have a relaxing day @ work

When will people/companies learn. I wonder is a day worth of lost productivity worth the price of a HD?
