I learned my lesson today...

So yeah, here is the story:

I'm sitting in the Taco Smell (Taco Bell) drive-thru getting ready to order. I have this guy walk up to me and ask me for a ride back to a hotel. I've always helped people that i've seen on the side of the road broke down (i've never picked up a hitch-hiker). I was a bit hesitant but since it was just me and i didn't have any kids or my wife with me, i said okay.

So he hops in my car, and he begins to tell me about how he has a 8 year old daughter and doesn't have gas money to get him about 90 miles. And after that begins to tell me that his hotel is about to kick him out because he can't pay for the room. So anyway, he keeps asking me to pay for his hotel room for one more night. I keep saying "No, i'm sorry, i can't do that."

When we get to the hotel he is still begging, so I say fine, let me go in and talk to the front desk guy. He tries to talk me out of it but I insist that if he wants me to pay for a room that I have to go in and talk to him. I walk in and ask the front-desk guy if the guy had stayed there the night before and what the situation was. The front-desk guy says that he had stayed there but that he was being forced to leave as of 12:30PM just as the guy had stated. But he suggested not paying for his room and that he was probably just bumming. I really had no intentions of buying his room anyway and I walk back out to my car and tell him that i'm not going to be paying for his room.

He gets upset and asks me to take him back to where I picked him up at. Again, I hesitated but said okay as it was only about a block away. About halfway there he says "Stop the car." He says it with the tone of voice that makes me think something is about to happen. I stop the car, take off my seat belt because I am either getting ready to jump out if he pulls something or i'm getting ready to at least defend myself. He gives me these really creepy eyes and starts telling me that I may have "passed up a blessing". After the sob talk and i'm sitting there focusing on his hands he gets out and I drive away. I honestly think he knew that I was getting ready to defend myself and that he was contemplating doing something.

His story didn't really make sense either, so he was obviously lying about his situation. He said that his mom was sending him money, but yet she lives only 80 miles or so away. She could havej ust came and picked him up. The front-desk guy also obviously knew more about his situation but wasn't telling me when he said that I shouldn't pay for his room. Also, he started out wanting gas money, then it progressed to another night at the hotel room, and he never wanted me to go in and talk to the front-desk guy at the hotel for some reason.

Cliffs:

1: I pickup some guy asking me for a ride while I was in a drive-thru.
2: He wants money for another night at the hotel he asked me to take him too.
3: After saying no he asks me for a ride back to where I picked him up at.
4: He tells me "Stop the car" halfway there and I think was contemplating doing something.
5: He finally gets out of my car after about 2-3 minutes of talking.

Lets just say that I learned my lesson. No need to tell me about how dumb it was... I know.

this happens a lot, you have to watch who you let into your car. ive picked up a couple of these guys before, on the premise that maybe this one is going to actually NEED a tow or a jump to get his truck back on the road. first thing i do is put my pistol on my lap in their plain view, and ask where they wanna go, which usually ends up with them getting out of my car right there. one guy actually lasted 2 blocks before asking me to please stop and let him out. im a bit strange sometimes, so i think i freak them out after a bit.

There's being a good person, and then there's being an idiot. You should probably be more careful.

There's a very thin line between begging and mugging when it comes to crackheads.

hehe, yeah, I just said to myself after breaking down one time that I'd try to help out anyone that I could and that hopefully it would come back to me the next time I need help. I drive to work on an older country highway everyday and had a flat tire. Unfortunately I had taken my jack out for some reason so I couldn't fix it. Without a cell phone I decided to walk to the nearest gas station. I ended up walking about 4 miles before I finally caught a lady pulling out of her driveway and although hesitant she let me use her cell phone. It was starting to rain out, i'm wearing khaki's, a nice shirt and jacket that morning and no one even pulled over to ask if I needed help.

I can see stopping for someone with an obvious car problem but picking up some random guy is just asking for trouble...

Theres a big difference between talking to sombody through a cracked window with your car in gear & letting them get in with you ... once sombody is in the car next to you, you're in potential serious trouble even if you are armed & ready yourself.

Hopefully you have learned from this experience & will be more careful next time ... its only luck that kept you from becoming a crime statistic.

So you've properly prepared yourself for self-defense by placing a weapon on the passenger side?

the same glove compartment that is in front of the passenger?

i have a nice lefthanded holster and an ambidextrous safety on my ruger. i also have a boot knife in a slot at my right hand at the seat level, as well as my pocket knife on my side. im not paranoid at all, but i damn well wont be surprised and overtaken by much. cops always give me weird looks when they stop me, but oh well. they always get over it, and usually end up chatting for a while after they let me go.

Well, the logic behind it is if I get the feeling like sh!t is about to go down, I have it there if I need it. If Im in a bad neighborhood by some chance, I can grab it if I dont like the area...just in case.

And in the OP's scenario, if I were to pick up a stranger (which I would never), I would have the stun gun in my hand of in my lap before the dude got in my car.

I don't mind giving strangers a ride. Remember that guy who claimed to have given billionaire Howard Hughes a ride to Vegas (Hughes was dressed in such a way as to appear like a transient/bum), and then they found that 'highly contested' will where Hughes supposedly left him 10% of his estate (however the will was never proven legit, and the guy saw no money). I've also been on the other side of the fence where I was walking along and someone pulls over to offer a ride (in my younger days), which I always appreciated and still do.

So you're going to defend yourself with a stun gun on your crotch?
