Same place he is now......i.e. not there to keep you from making stupid decisions. You need to rely on your own judgement and freaking common sense.....more so the later obviously.

Tell you, what, next time you have a decision like this to make, ask yourself what ATOT would do.

This is why I keep a stun gun in my glove compartment.

So you've properly prepared yourself for self-defense by placing a weapon on the passenger side?

Well, the logic behind it is if I get the feeling like sh!t is about to go down, I have it there if I need it. If Im in a bad neighborhood by some chance, I can grab it if I dont like the area...just in case.

And in the OP's scenario, if I were to pick up a stranger (which I would never), I would have the stun gun in my hand of in my lap before the dude got in my car.

So you're going to defend yourself with a stun gun on your crotch?

Yes, I'm going to tie it to my crotch and stun the assailant. Seriously, what are you trying to get at? Im not saying that it will protect me in every situation I may come across, and Im not saying that it will ever protect me in any situation. But Id rather have it in the car and not need it than not have it in the car and need it.

I'm not disagreeing with you that it was a dumb mistake. I guess you've never made one eh? Congrats on being the first man to never make a mistake in his life right here. I guess the difference between you and I is that i'm willing to laugh at and share my dumb moments with others here on ATOT.

No worries, he's just trolling my thread.

I dont get it, the hotel was only about a blobk away from where you originally picked him up? When he wanted the second ride you should have told him to walk his lazy ass there.

So yeah, here is the story:

I'm sitting in the Taco Smell (Taco Bell) drive-thru getting ready to order. I have this guy walk up to me and ask me for a ride back to a hotel. I've always helped people that i've seen on the side of the road broke down (i've never picked up a hitch-hiker). I was a bit hesitant but since it was just me and i didn't have any kids or my wife with me, i said okay.

So he hops in my car, and he begins to tell me about how he has a 8 year old daughter and doesn't have gas money to get him about 90 miles. And after that begins to tell me that his hotel is about to kick him out because he can't pay for the room. So anyway, he keeps asking me to pay for his hotel room for one more night. I keep saying "No, i'm sorry, i can't do that."

When we get to the hotel he is still begging, so I say fine, let me go in and talk to the front desk guy. He tries to talk me out of it but I insist that if he wants me to pay for a room that I have to go in and talk to him. I walk in and ask the front-desk guy if the guy had stayed there the night before and what the situation was. The front-desk guy says that he had stayed there but that he was being forced to leave as of 12:30PM just as the guy had stated. But he suggested not paying for his room and that he was probably just bumming. I really had no intentions of buying his room anyway and I walk back out to my car and tell him that i'm not going to be paying for his room.

He gets upset and asks me to take him back to where I picked him up at. Again, I hesitated but said okay as it was only about a block away. About halfway there he says "Stop the car." He says it with the tone of voice that makes me think something is about to happen. I stop the car, take off my seat belt because I am either getting ready to jump out if he pulls something or i'm getting ready to at least defend myself. He gives me these really creepy eyes and starts telling me that I may have "passed up a blessing". After the sob talk and i'm sitting there focusing on his hands he gets out and I drive away. I honestly think he knew that I was getting ready to defend myself and that he was contemplating doing something.

His story didn't really make sense either, so he was obviously lying about his situation. He said that his mom was sending him money, but yet she lives only 80 miles or so away. She could havej ust came and picked him up. The front-desk guy also obviously knew more about his situation but wasn't telling me when he said that I shouldn't pay for his room. Also, he started out wanting gas money, then it progressed to another night at the hotel room, and he never wanted me to go in and talk to the front-desk guy at the hotel for some reason.

Cliffs:

1: I pickup some guy asking me for a ride while I was in a drive-thru.
2: He wants money for another night at the hotel he asked me to take him too.
3: After saying no he asks me for a ride back to where I picked him up at.
4: He tells me "Stop the car" halfway there and I think was contemplating doing something.
5: He finally gets out of my car after about 2-3 minutes of talking.

Lets just say that I learned my lesson. No need to tell me about how dumb it was... I know.

Believe me, you're not the only one.

Oh...I'm sure you have other reasons for carrying around a stun gun

In this day and age, I don't trust anyone like that. You really have no idea who you're dealing with. More and more people are being killed by crazy ass people who wait on the side of the road to have someone pick them up. Although your intentions are good, I think you should take a look at it this way. You're living for you and you alone, unless you have a family then in that case you're living for yourself and your family. It's quite obvious what I'm trying to get at. You only have one chance in this world to live your life and then you die. It's better to live out your entire life than cut it short by trying to help someone who is selfish enough to try and take your life.

What are you, a getaway driver? Dog the bounty hunter? You carry two weapons in your car and get pulled over by cops often enough that you speak of it in generalities??

Okay, I've bought people food when they said that they're hungry. People stand there saying that they're hungry on the UIUC campus, and I'd offer a meal. I did it about ten times. Only twice did someone take me up on the offer.

Many, many people have asked for "gas money". I use to keep a gas can in the bed of my truck (it had a topper), and I'd offer to fill them up with what I had. No one ever accepted.

I wouldn't pay for someone's room, I wouldn't give them a ride back to Taco Bell (especially when it's a block away), and I certainly would not give someone money.

This is why I keep a firearm in my unlocked car at all times.

You can find it parked at the courthouse. Third spot from the handicap spaces.

There is no way in hell I'd let a complete stranger in my car or my home. You're lucky nothing happened other than him inconveniencing you.

Yeah really. Paranoia is a relative measure, and since most of the world doesn't feel the need to drive around while heavily armed, I'd say that hanoverphist IS paranoid.

Oh, and THREE weapons.

I drive to work on an older country highway everyday and had a flat tire. Unfortunately I had taken my jack out for some reason so I couldn't fix it. Without a cell phone I decided to walk to the nearest gas station. I ended up walking about 4 miles before I finally caught a lady pulling out of her driveway and although hesitant she let me use her cell phone. It was starting to rain out, i'm wearing khaki's, a nice shirt and jacket that morning and no one even pulled over to ask if I needed help.

I've helped people stranded in the past but am less and less likely to do so because of creeps like the guy you picked up.
