These ads are fvcking pissing me off. Apparently the higher-ups don't understand that not everyone has a nice 24 inch widescreen monitor or two on their desk to be able to stand the extra space that POS consumes sitting over there in a way-too-prominent position at the left. :disgust:

This is almost to the point that I'd be leaving now if it weren't for the wonderful people in the Team AnandTech DC community. You guys are helpful and nice enough that I think I'll still stick around.

I'm a coinflip away from leaving the entire anandtech community. I've been an ever present lurker thats helped with some of teh distributed projects but this is taking it a bit too far. I refuse to support a site that makes me want to leave.

The "AnandTech Deals" person who is supposedly behind all of this has fvcked up before (such as with the TigerDirect ad on the forums, as pointed out in the huge FI thread), but fortunately things did get resolved. I hope this gets resolved as well before we have a mass exodus of people pissed off over a stupid ad.

a quick cut and paste of my other post.

quick solution, unmaximize IE, move it so it 'hangs a couple inches off the right side of the screen, stretch it to fill the whole screen, then move it to the left until the ads are off the side of the monitor and the forums fit snug on the screen, and no ads on the left 'that you can see'

all fine and dandy except that I have to move my IE window to push the back button.

Similar idea: You could set Trillian/Aim to always be on top and stretch them to cover. On other pages though it's covered. To go backspace just do alt-back arrow. I think at very least they should make the ads like the Yahoo! ads that you can close, or that go over the page but are not popups.

I'm a subscriber, but only for 42 more days, and I doubt i'll resubscribe when it comes round. But there is no way i'm putting up with the ad on the left. Top/bottom is fine, right I could probably handle, but not on the left. Makes it look SO unprofessional.

I have been suggesting they move them up alongside the AT logo, and PM/poll links, and then make the posts wrap round the ads, then that would be better, otherwise you have that huge whitespace down the side

I don't mind them so much, but I do think they could of come up with a better place to put them. I would rather see them between the posts, like every third post or something like that. And maybe some ads that list sale prices to entice clicking instead of bothersome text ads that really don't make me give a crap.

I have found a couple of ways around this. If you are using MoZilla, set up a profile that you can use for just AT and turn off all java and javascript. You will still see the header, but no ads. Then there is also http://www.proxomitron.org/ which I have not tried yet. I was reading a thread in OT where many people were ticked off about this also, and a few had the same response as Evadman. It is a shame. It is either a test to see if anyone would get ticked, or a blatant attempt to force more people to subscribe. Either way it is annoying!

Well they really don't bother me all that much.

Not to defend the Anandtech staff but I can't imagine the amount of bandwidth this site must require.

111281 users are registered to the AnandTech forum.

I would think it is safe to say that most people do not subscribe which leaves a great deal of revenue to generate to purchase bandwidth so we can all post on these boards. I manage a colocation facility where we are have dual redundant sonet ring upstream to the internet and the cost is substantial. Then take into consideration the amount Anand pays monthly just for the footprint and power requirements of each of the racks within the data center. At last count it seemed they had at least six enclosed frames.

I would think this site would require at least a burstable DS3 connection if not a full DS3 or more, I'm sure the MRTG graphs would be interesting.

I see this as nothing more than a business decision they have made. It may make them lose some readers but I'm sure their view is that would be better than going offline.

I use it, and have yet to find a way around the google ad (the only one I really care about killing anyway, the others don't bother me, except for the flash ones, which I kill). Supposedly there's another hack out there to "hide" it, but I've not figured it out yet, and the person who did isn't posting it (wisely) because they would "fix" the "problem" as soon as he did that.
