What does this have to do with Asylum seekers?
Your desire to distinguish between illegal aliens is foreign to me. I cannot recall the last time anyone ever spoke of people crossing our southern border as "Asylum seekers". Do we consider anyone illegal anymore, why even have a border if we intend to let every single person through? Do they just use a magic word and all is okay? Or maybe you'd have our border open to families.
The basic problem with pretending we don't have a border, by pretending we can house an unlimited number of people, is that inevitably there would be so many people in our country that our standard of living would drop like a rock. To the point where people would rather flee the United States than immigrate to it. That is the end result of having too many people. At some point it has to stop. Why not now? Water resources are already stressed. It's about time we stopped our population growth before it has serious, painful, consequences.
Why should I recognize illegal aliens as Asylum seekers? Far as I'm concerned they have no right to cross the border. Venezuela might be horrific enough to consider their people for Asylum, but frankly there are plenty more countries in the Americas, and they are a lot closer and easier to get to. There is no reason to accept people for Asylum. There is no reason to flood the United States with people, our population growth needs to stop.
I simply do not recognize Asylum. Not when millions already flood through the southern border. Speaking of which....
Detention as we catch them crossing could be done humanely, such as refugee camps, I would support that. But it would require legislation to fund and establish. A stronger border wall would prevent most illegal crossings. If people overstay their Visa then at least they are documented and we know which country and whose family the kids belong to. That'd make the situation a hell of a lot easier to deal with. And if, IF, we can settle down the flood and the chaos at the border, then we can battle our fellow Americans to make sure our long term residents, illegal or not, are all brought in out of the shadows, treated fairly and compassionately. Where those residents are assimilated as permanent legal residents with citizens for children.
TL;DR, I favor better treatment of first time offenders, stronger security to prevent illegal crossing, and amnesty for long term residents.
If someone wants Asylum they can talk to our embassy.
